The first monthly breeding cattle sale held on Thursday 21st May featured 233 head and proved to be highly successful.

There were sufficient suitably distanced bidders to ensure a solid trade for all types and plenty of highlights for the top-notch examples. Quality was distinctly varied and prices followed the quality with big variations between the best and the also rans.

The sale commenced with 10 stock bulls of which 8 changed hands. A decent strike rate for such a commodity. Prices were as follows:

Cows and Calves

The next section was the cows with calves at foot and began with 28 outfits from RM Calcott of Tamworth.

Top priced outfit was

£1,980 for BB Cow (93 mths) with Autumn born heifer calf

There were others at:

£1,640 for Lim x Cow (66 mths) with 1 mth Steer calf

£1,500 for Lim x Cow (64 mths) with 2 mth Steer calf

£1,450 for Lim x Cow (42 mths) with 6 mth Hfr calf

£1,400 for Lim x Cow (38 mths) with 4 mth Hfr calf

Of the others:

7 sold in the £1,300’s

6 sold in the £1,200’s

6 sold in the £1,100’s

3 between £1000 and £1100

Other consignments included:

£1,320 for Sim x (32 mths) with hfr calf M Ollerenshaw, Bradwell

£1,280 for Lim x (122 mths) with Bull calf RJG Swift, Combs

GM Limer from Taddington had 6 outfits selling from £1,520 to £1,660 to average £1,616

They comprised Lim x hfrs (36 mths to 42 mths) with Lim x calves (2 mths)

£1,380 for Blonde x hfr (32 mths) with bull calf J Melland, Flagg

£1,350 for Lim x (46 mths) with Sal calf (1 mth) Cox Bros, Great Longstone

£1,350 for Lim x (44 mths) with Sal calf (1 mth) Cox Bros, Great Longstone

£1,400 for Lim x (37 mths) with hfr calf (2 Wk) M Wright, Hartington

£1,300 for AA x (34 mths) with hfr calf (2 Wk) M Wright, Hartington

£1,240 for Sim x (156 mths) with hfr calf JA Duggins, Netherseal

There were a number of other outfits, mostly in the £700 to £1,000 bracket which all found a ready market.

The sale concluded with some 50 bulling heifers, again quality was key with the preferred bunches attracting fierce competition, examples being:
