Bakewell Market Report for Monday 12th March 2018

838 Cattle and 2,316 Sheep, Finished Bulls making £2,273 and Hoggs selling to £148 gives a taste of a successful day at Bakewell.

The Store and Breeding Cattle section was boosted by some which were unable to come last week and re-booked accordingly. The total entry amounted to 512 and sold on a tremendous trade with Steers to £1,240, Heifers £1,210 and Cow and Calf Outfits to £1,610.

The finished cattle section with 108 head made the news this week with a bull grossing £2,273. Heifers peaked at 244p and the average for 49 heifers looked good at 204.4p.

Turning to the 109 OTM Cattle and Feeding Cows top prices were 182p/kg and £1,436 per head. The overall average a creditable 127.8p.

A useful turnout of calves with 109 on offer, bulls to £350 and heifers to £280.

There was plenty of excitement in the sheep department. The 1,632 hoggs peaked at 282 pence and an astonishing £148.05 per head. In terms of averages the SQQ was 241.9p and the overall 238.3p. One interesting statistic is that the 1,632 hoggs averaged within a few pence of £100 per head. Finally the 684 Cull Sheep, Ewes topped at £155 and averaged a healthy £79.82.

108 OTM, BARREN & FEEDING COWS – overall average 127.8p (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

A good turnout of cows with a very similar trade to the last couple of weeks with all cattle looking well sold. Top call on the day was a tremendous Blue feeding cow at 182p (£1,436) from PA Swindell, Chelmorton. Plenty of good cows 150-170p with leaner cows for feeding 130-150p.

66 Black & White and ex dairy cows average 114.2p

Strong money with the best cows 135-148p looking well sold with several grossing over £1,000. Good Holsteins 125-135p with leaner cows 100-120 and plain cows either side of £1/kilo.

Back to a proper show after the troubles of last week and trade was absolutely on fire again with all buyers operating included a number of butchers around the ring.

38 Young Bulls average 177.4p

A tremendous show and trade with the top 11 over £2 and selling to a high of 227p for a tremendous Limousin from Stan and David Fearn, Wardlow Mires. With others at 217p and 207p to gross £1,718. Undoubtedly the highlight of the bulls was a wonderful Pure Simmental bull from Lorraine Renshaw and Ian Brassington selling at 192p to gross an unbelievable £2,273.28 which must be one of the highest prices ever for a commercial beef animal, not bad for 23 months. 21 Black and White bulls topped at 169p for a Friesian.

Good numbers and trade with some lovely cattle in today’s entry. 15 best sorts topped 220 pence with a high of 244p for a show heifer “Charlies Angel” from Wayne Smith, Leek, she sold to Henshall Butchers, Chinley. James Blackshaw had 236 for his best with Mark and Rachel Hadfield up to 229 for their Limousin. A tremendous run of 10 Lims & Blues from Vernon Belfield sold up to £1556 and £1555 to average £1398.

A catch-up week with a tremendous entry of 512. That figure clearly including some re-booked from last week which had been unable to travel. The extensive early-warning list on the website over the weekend had clearly attracted additional buyers, some distinctly long distance. The result, an outstanding trade which the prices below will demonstrate. The sorting and numbering staff did a fantastic job bunching level lots where possible and as a consequence the sale was completed by 2.30pm.

A further increase in numbers and generally an improved show in terms of quality forwards. Perhaps the very best calves a little easier but on the whole a solid trade with a number of returning purchasers not seen for sometimes looking for calves of all shapes and sizes. Bulls peaked to £350 for a B. Blue with Blondes to £320 and Simmentals to £300. Stronger heifers saw Limousins to £280, Simmentals to £250 and B. Blues to £240. Significant interest in the Black and White dairy calves on offer, with a new purchaser operating ensuring a strong trade from start to finish

A total entry of 2316 sheep included a very good entry of 1632 lambs once again Bakewell saw some excellent runs of quality lambs on offer with buyers bidding briskly for all types. The very best Farm Assured export spec lambs peaked at 282p/kg with the top 10 pens averaging 277p/kg. A run of 106 lambs from a North Staffordshire vendor averaged 269.64p/kg and £118/head. The top gross for the big butchers lambs £148/head with 11 pens over £120/head. The overall average 241.96p/kg.

A good show of 684 Cull Ewes and Rams saw prices very brisk for all types with best heavy Texel Ewes to £155, best Suffolk Ewes in the £95-£110 with heavy Dorset Ewes in the same bracket. The heavy Mule Ewes sold in the £90 - £100 bracket. The top 10 pens averaged £136.
