Download sales report

Business in full swing at Bakewell with 738 Cattle and 1,578 Sheep.

The Cattle numbers enhanced by another excellent entry of 181 Finished Cattle an increase over last weeks recent record of 174. It is pleasing to report not only the size of the entry, but also the level of trade – top figures 240p and £1,588 and our regular barometer of prices the average for the 92 Heifers at 192.4p looking very healthy.

Store & Breeding Cattle numbers are building up again with 364 on offer. Plenty of buyers operating and an outstanding trade right through. Steers to £1,110 and Heifers £1,035.

In the OTM and Feeding Cow department numbers were also up at 104. Top figures 179p and £1,538 per head. The average looked good at 124.4p

A good proportion of Bakewell OTM Cattle are purchased for further feeding, releasing their “store” potential. Cattle sent direct to the abattoir can only realise their value for meat, so why not give them a new lease of life and ensure they are properly finished before entering the food chain.

89 Calves on offer with Bulls to £385 and Heifers to £290.

In the Sheep sections numbers were down somewhat, perhaps indicating that there is a shortage in the offing.

The 993 Finished Lambs maintained last weeks outstanding trade with top figures to 248p and £157.68 and the SQQ average looked highly satisfactory at 216.3p. A quick look at the records shows the average last year at 207p, at least we have the rest of the year to run before uncertainty looms again.

A useful entry of 561 Cull Sheep saw trade again very strong.

Ewes peaked at £150 with the overall average a hefty £87.07

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE - (Auctioneer Alastair Sneddon)

A much better entry of 364 head sold on a great trade with an abundance of buyers operating and no shortage of demand for all types.

Young Cattle in particular looked very well sold. Stronger sorts attracted fierce competition, although it is clear that changes to maximise carcase weights are starting to concentrate minds.

Store Lambs

Just two pens of longer-term Store Lambs attracted very brisk bidding with Jacob x Lambs to £69 and a mixed lot of Lambs also selling at £69/head.

561 Ewes & Rams

Another good entry with the best still a fast trade but some vendors bringing a second drawer load in comparison to last week.

The top call was £150 for very big Continentals from David Timm at York with Jackie Trueman at £149 for Texels.

Generally, Mules as dear as last week with the strong horned Ewes just as dear.

Best Mules around the £90’s with some Swales nearly £70 (even for small frame – but well fleshed)

The top 8 pens averaged just as dear as last week at £136.38.

The Slaughter Tups dearer than last week to a top at £130 for Texels from Sara Hudson & Fran Taylor. Strong Suffolks over £100.
