A 100% clearance throughout the market today, and the ongoing weather conditions are starting to take an effect on trade.

The dispersal of pedigree Dairy Shorthorns on behalf of regular vendor Geoff Tunnicliffe and Family met a very good trade with a top of £1770 for a third calver. The commercial entry saw a top price of £1800 for a fresh heifer.

More numbers forward in the barren section, with trade back on the week and short of good meated sorts. Top price of 134p/kg for Holsteins and 129.5p/kg for Danish Reds.

Clean cattle sold to 198p/kg for a British Blue heifer from Reg Critchlow which went to Peter Lymer of J W Ash Butchers of Leek and will be sold at their stall at Leek Show at the end of this month.

Lamb trade comparing well with national trends for the time of the year with more coming forward. Best lambs to 200p/kg and ewes to £107/head.

A good trade again for the pig section with a top of 146p/kg for bacon pigs and £70/head for stores.

Calves a little harder to place on Tuesday but a top of £440 for a British Blue bull.

Two loads of round baled Hay forward both selling for £150/tonne.

Improved numbers forward but trade generally less on the week, with a shortage of good meated cows forward.

Top price of 134p/kg for a 600kg Holstein from E Morley & Sons, Derby with a 840kg Danish Red from J W Handford & Sons, Birch Vale at 129.5p/kg who sold another Danish Red at 755kg for 127.5p/kg.

Limousins sold to 129.5p/kg for a 680kg cow from David Elliott, Tideswell.

Top headage price of £1107 for a 900kg Hereford from J B Proctor with Danish Reds to £1087.80 and Holsteins to £953.93.

A 1215kg Hereford stock bull from J & W Knight, Horton sold to 122p/kg (£1482.30).

Overage steers sold to 158p/kg for a 595kg Angus from EM & CP Naden, Cheddleton.

Heifers sold to 198p/kg for a 510kg British Blue from Reg Critchlow of Grindon which went to Peter Lymer of J W Ash Butchers of Leek and will be sold at their stall at Leek Show at the end of this month. A 515kg Blonde heifer from EM & CP Naden, Cheddleton at 182p/kg and a 525kg British Blue from Reg Critchlow sold for 180p/kg.

Top headage price of £1020.65 for a 685kg Hereford from J Fernyhough, Leek and Blues to £1009.80.

A packed shed of dairies at Leek on Tuesday saw the commercial trade slightly easier as the sunny spell continues to hit grass supplies. However, the Shorthorns sold really well proving yet again leek is the place to sell.

Quality was a tad mixed but the extensive entry of Shorthorn crosses met a good trade.

Topping the day was the Summerfield family of Keele with a 30kg heifer at £1800.

Brian and Andrew Beech of Sutton had a lovely run of heifers which topped at £1720 with a Shorthorn x to £1710.

The commencement of the herd dispersal of the pedigree Quarnford herd of Shorthorns on behalf of the Tunnicliffe family met a strong trade topping at £1770 for a January calved third calver by Dunham Sovereign. She went to the Belfield family of Quarnford.


An unregistered May calved second calver reached £1520 to Messrs Norbury of Sproston with a January calved fourth calver at £1500.

In the commercial section Shorthorn in-calf heifers topped at £950 with a 3 ½ year old pedigree Shorthorn stock bull bred by Rob Kite and shown by Messrs Howe to £1500.

A substantial entry already forward for next weeks pedigree sale with a total number in excess of 100. The entry includes 14 fresh pedigree British Friesian heifers from Messrs Potter together with in-calf heifers and youngstock from other homes. Catalogues will be available online by the end of the week.

Good numbers forward again this week with a continuing good trade throughout.

Pork pigs sold to 136p/kg for 70kg pigs from W Gregson, Preston with a 71kg pig at 132p/kg from J & B Fentem & Sons.

Cutting pigs sold to 144p/kg for 82.5kg pigs from Chris Hine with a pen of 80kg pigs from J & B Fentem & Sons at 140p/kg who sold others to 139p/kg and 136p/kg

Bacon pigs sold to 146p/kg for 86kg pigs from J & B Fentem & Sons who had a pen of 86kg pigs at 143p/kg with R Wilson, Oldham selling two pens at 138p/kg.

Heavy pigs from R Wilson of Oldham sold to 120p/kg and 117p/kg for 107kg and 106kg pigs respectively.

Cull sows sold to 72p/kg for a 256kg sow from J Wheawall and a 222kg sow from Bernard Minshull with two more sows at 69p/kg for 228kg and 225kg sows from J Wheawall.

A larger entry and very much a tale of two halves. The best sorts well bid for and a premium for Farm Assured sorts. Best big lambs grossing over £100/head.

Well finished lambs selling 185p - 200p and lambs lacking weight and finish 150p - 170p which if there was any grass, would look good value to take on as stores.

A seasonal entry seeing a decent trade to a top of £107 for Texel ewes from Helen Hallam. Best Mules £70 - £80.

Overall average of £68.50 including a number showing signs of the lack of grass!


A small entry of Texel lambs up to £40/head for 25kg, again looking good value for anyone with a green field.

The best a good price but some second quality bulls less money. Trade peaked at £440 for a tremendous Blue from W E Turnock & Sons. 13 better bulls over £320. Mediums £260 - £300 with smaller bulls less.

Harder work with the averages back but it has to be said that quality was not as good as last week. A lovely Blue from Andy Williamson topped at £292 with others at £285 and £275. 12 best over £230, medium heifers £190 - £220 with smalls under £180.

A very good price with plenty of buyers. Angus bulls sold to £305 for J Brough & Son with Herefords to £295 for Messrs Brough & Fox. 6 bulls over £265. Best heifers topped at £150 for a lovely Angus and £140 for Herefords.

Good Friesian bulls sold to £145, £125 (twice) and £105 for Ian Gregson, Hanbury. Processing bulls generally £40 - £70 today and look well sold.
