Leek Market for Tuesday 12th September 2017

A full show again today in each section with new vendors forward from a growing area.

A good show of barren cattle forward today with British Blue stock bulls topping at 164p/kg to gross £1689.20 and cows to 147p/kg for Limousins. A small but nice show of clean cattle in today topping at 214p/kg for Limousin steers and 211p/kg for Limousin heifers.

A good show of quality calves forward and trade was on fire once again, especially for the native heifers. Top price of £422 for a British Blue bull calf from the Davenport family of Brereton.

Lambs sold on a solid trade, in line with national outlets to average a pleasing 173.5p/kg with the best to 198p/kg.

A good turnout of pigs this week selling on a decent trade with a top price of 165p/kg for 82.5kg pigs and weaners to £51 per head.

A full dairy shed with a great turnout of buyers for the dispersal on behalf of J R Bowers & Son of Pentrich, Ripley whose Friesians sold to £2010. Top price on the day was a lovely Friesian heifer from the Howe family at £2260.

An increased entry with trade very similar selling to a top price of 147p/kg for a 715kg Limousin cow from Colin Lymer with a 675kg Limousin cow from Ian cook at 144p/kg and a 530kg Angus cow from Ian Lomax at 141p/kg.

MRI cows from J W Handford & Sons at 705kg achieved 138p/kg with a 535kg South Devon from P J Davenport at 134p/kg.

Several other cows made over 120p/kg with a number of new vendors forward. A pleasing overall average of 111.21p/kg.

Stock bulls were an excellent trade topping at 164p/kg for a 1030kg British Blue from J Robotham of Swinscoe to gross £1689.20 and 158p/kg for a 1040kg Limousin bull from RG & AS Williamson to gross £1643.20.

Two neat butchers cattle from Mark Butler were in good demand selling up to 214p/kg for a 535kg Limousin steer and 211p/kg for a 505kg Limousin steer.

A 660kg Blonde steer from J S Hine of Biddulph Park sold for 185p/kg. A Simmental heifer from Rushton Spencer achieved 187p/kg and a 585kg Blonde heifer from Peter Naden at 186p/kg. a 560kg Montbeliarde heifer from Peter Sherratt sold for 183p/kg.

Top headage price of £1144.90 for a Limousin steer from Mark Butler with Mr Hines Blonde steer at £1221 and heifers up to £1224.85.

British Friesian Herd Dispersal to £2010

Another very busy day in the Dairy Section on Tuesday saw the Howe family of Litton have a fantastic trade for their 3 heifers which included a Shorthorn heifer. Alongside the strong trade for the British Friesian dispersal this is proof again of the superb and ever increasing following for these breeds at Leek!


Topping the day was the Howes black and white heifer giving 30kg at £2260. They had a second at £2060 both clinched by the Burton family of Basford. Bidding for their pretty Shorthorn heifer eventually finished at £1900 to Steve Ryder of Dilhorne.

Numerous heifers headed into the £1900’s including a 28kg from the Leaventhorpe Herd of John Allen at £1990 to Geoff Brownsword of Brailsford and a 30kg heifer from Richard Lomas of Calow at £1940 to Messrs Nicholls. The top 8 heifers within the commercial section averaged a superb £1955.


Cows peaked at £1800 for a lovely Montbeliarde X 2nd Calver from Messrs Platt of Bamford. She went to Messrs Brocklehurst of Wincle.

The sale of the commercial British Friesian Herd on behalf of the Bower family of Pentrich topped at £2010 for a fresh 2nd calver by Morecourt Hilton with another to £1770. A fresh heifer giving 20kg came close behind at £1760.

Next week we have a very busy Pedigree Sale with towards 90 Milkers already entered along with a group of 12 In-calf Heifers and an entry of 10 fresh cows and heifers in the commercial section from Rob Parker of Ticknall. An increased entry with a good company of buyers for all types.

Butchers pigs sold up to 142p/kg for pork pigs from J & B Fentem & Sons with others at 140p/kg.

Cutting pigs topped the market at 165p/kg for 82.5kg pigs from P Nadin of Meerbrook with 75kg pigs from E A Cooper & Sons achieving 152p/kg and Mr Fentem at 150p/kg & 148p/kg for 80kg cutters.

Bacon pigs sold up to 158p/kg for P Nadin of Meerbrook with others at 142p/kg for J & B Fentem & Sons.

Top headage price was £105 for pork pigs, £136.13 for cutters and £149.31 for bacon pigs.

Cull boars sold to 58p/kg for a 300kg boar from S A Hulme with cull sows up to 60p/kg for a 227kg sow from the same vendor.

Store pigs topped at £51 for a pen from J Ball of Sandbach with others to £50.

A smaller show, which is disappointing given we have orders for 1000 each week. Nevertheless, a solid trade for the lambs on offer with best to 198p/kg from Mr Harrison of Priestcliffe.

Premium lambs generally 185p - 195p, prime 175 - 185p and others 162p - 170p. Only very light weights below 160p which generally went for further feeding.

Overall average of 173.5p/kg.

A small entry sold on a solid trade but a little less in general than the past few weeks. Even so, the best still £90 and above up to a top price of £110 for rams and £101 for ewes. Overall average £63 per head.

More cull sheep could be sold each week to the vendors advantage.

One more than last week with the trade nicely up on last week with strong bidding on all calves. 17 nest bred sorts topped £350 with a top call of £422 for a super shaped blue bull from D & W Davenport, Brereton. Medium bulls £290 - £340 with smaller bulls under £270.
