Leek Market for Tuesday 13th February 2018

A full shed of Dairies today with the dispersal on behalf of James Woodward & Family drawing a lovely crowd of buyers with the herd topping at £2150 and £2040.

Hogg’s again a very fast trade with an overall average of 206p/kg with best quality lambs to 240p/kg and heavier lambs to top at £116.85. Cull ewes topped at £130 for Texel’s.

A smaller entry of calves for the time of year, and prices similar to that of previous weeks. Top call of £400 twice for Blue and Limousin bull calves.

A quality entry of barren cattle forward today sold on a solid trade, to top at 148p/kg for British Blue from G E Brookes & Partners. Clean cattle sold to 195p/kg for a 605kg Simmental heifer.

Pigs were a fast trade in comparison to previous weeks, topping at 168p/kg for 86.5kg pigs from P Nadin, Meerbrook.

Less cows about today but were sold on a solid trade throughout. Some good quality about today, topping at 148p/kg for a British Blue from G E Brookes & Partners, Loxley at 735kg, with a 670kg Limousin from C Sharpley of Wildboarclough at 142p/kg. A 675kg Belted Galloway from WR & KJ Harvey, Rue Hill realised 135p/kg.

Black & whites sold to 137p/kg for an 880kg Holstein from G E Brookes & Partners with others at 133p/kg for a 750kg Holstein from JP & SR Slack, Taxal.

Top headage price of the day was £1205.60 for Holsteins from G E Brookes & Partners with Blues to £1087.80, Herefords to £1020.50 and Limousins to £951.40.

A 990kg British Blue stock bull from C Sharpley, Wildboarclough realised 136p/kg to gross £1346.40.

Small entry today, topping at 195p/kg for a 605kg Simmental heifer from Rushton Spencer, to gross £1179.75 with a 590kg Hereford steer from T J Hargreaves, Gratton selling to 163p/kg to gross £961.70.

A lovely herd of cows from James Woodward and family of Mapperley, Derbyshire drew a strong crowd of buyers with trade topping at £2150 with others to £2040, £2000 and £1960.


It was a fresh Laurelhill Classio daughter giving 25.8kg that took the top honours. Giving 25.8kg, she went to Andrew Wright of Sandbach. He also went on to take another fresh heifer by Chalclyffe Ransom at £2040.

Milky cows calved in November peaked at £1830 with others to £1790.

Trade was solid throughout with further dispersal sales booked for later in the month and March. The next is in a fortnight, Tuesday 28th February where 200+ milkers will come under the hammer on behalf of the Gaunt family of Dronfield Woodhouse. Averaging towards 9000kg and averaging 30kg daily these good square bagged cows can be thoroughly recommended.

Pigs were up again on the week, being a good trade throughout! More required each week.

Pork pigs at 60kg sold to 144p/kg for Rosie Watson, Apesford with 62kg pigs at 132p/kg from the same home.

Cutting pigs topped at 158p/kg for 80.5kg pigs from P Nadin, Meerbrook to gross £127.19 who also had a 79kg pig at 152p/kg (£120.08). 79kg pigs from JA & EM Ratcliffe sold to 148p/kg with the Fentem family selling cutters to 144p/kg (£120.96) and 142p/kg (twice).

Bacon pigs topped at 168p/kg (£145.23) for 86.5kg pigs from P Nadin, Meerbrook, with 101kg pigs from J & B Fentem & Sons at 150p/kg (£152). JA & EM Ratcliffe sold 96kg pigs to 148p/kg (£142.08).

Heavy pigs at 107kg from Chris Hine sold to 148p/kg (£158.36) with others at 115p/kg (£128.23) from S A Hulme, Leek and 113p/kg for an 108kg pig (£122.04) from M R Banham, Bromsgrove.

Cull sows at 188kg sold to 66p/kg (£124.08) from S A Hulme with a 257kg sow from J & B Fentem & Sons selling to 54p/kg (£138.78).

Weaners sold to £39 from A Worth, Marton.

Trade continues at a pace! Prices were exceptional from start to finish and there was nothing less than 200p, regardless of weight for the first half of the sale. Overall average of 206p/kg.

45kg and over AVERAGED £101.20 which included a number of natives! Top headage of £116.85 from J B Rowlinson & Son, Gawsworth. Many more could have been sold to advantage.

Unbelievable money with the smaller sorts looking increasingly dear for processing. Rearer’s £100 plus with Friesians to £185 and Holsteins to £140. Best processing sorts £70 - £85 with smaller calves £30 - £60.
