Leek Market for Tuesday 15th March 2016

A busy Dairy shed for the monthly Pedigree sale seeing a good company of buyers with a top price of £1840 for a newly calved heifer from Messrs Mellor of Earl Sterndale.

Calves continue at recent rates to a top price of £385 for bulls and £368 for heifers.

Butchers hogg’s & ewes were in short supply and a good, brisk trade selling up to 235p/kg and £110.69 per head.

Barren cows were similar trade with a high proportion of leaner cows seeing a top price of 126p/kg and a top headage price of £759.

Clean cattle sold up to 206p/kg for a smart Limousin heifer from Robert Belfield.

A similar entry of cows this week with a top price of 126p/kg for a 41 month old Limousin weighing 515kg.

Black & white cows achieved up to 102p/kg for a 665kg beast from R & T Clowes & Son of Dilhorne. 98p/kg was paid for a 655kg Swedish Red from ME Cawser of Sudbury and 97p/kg for a 770kg Holstein from WE Turnock & Son.

A similar entry of cattle with trade steadier in keeping with the national and local trends.

A neat 505kg Limousin heifer from Robert Belfield was well sold at 206p/kg with a 495kg Stabiliser heifer from the same home making 198p/kg.

A 510kg Limousin steer from SP Bray of Cauldon Lowe achieved 196p/kg and a 515kg Limousin steer from Wayne Smith sold for 190p/kg.

Young bulls achieved up to 169p/kg for a 580kg Limousin X bull and 167p/kg for a 540kg Shorthorn X.

Top headage price was £1040.30 for Rob Belfield’s’ heifer and £1013.70 for SP Brays Limousin steer.

Trade surpassed all expectations on Tuesday with the best cows to £1760 and heifers to £1800.

Top cow was Braemarhouse Ponder Lucy from Messrs Mellor of Earl Sterndale. By Coldsprings Ponder she had given 8736kg as a heifer. She sold giving 42kg, going to Messrs Harrison of Cheadle.

Best heifer to £1800 was Wyedale Sordell Pauline from Messrs Furness & Taylor of Wormhill. By Heuvel Sordell her dam had given twice over 10,300kg. She sold giving 28kg she went to John Fernyhough of Swythamley.

The special entry of in-calf heifers from Rob Parkinsons Wilowna herd met a swift trade peaking at £1300 twice and averaging £1137.

A modest entry saw another very pleasing trade with all vendors pleased with their outcome. If you have hogg’s to sell, contact the auctioneer.

Top spot of 235p/kg today from Roger & Simon Bailey of Rushton for 46.2kg hoggs. Plenty of premium lambs exceeding 220p/kg with the top 10 pens averaging 226p/kg. Many more premium hoggs could be sold each week.

Heavy hoggs were perhaps a shade less but still plenty grossing over £100 per head to a top of £110.69 for A & K Farming of Heaton. Meated 50kg+ hogg’s regularly 180-190p but a shortage of these today.

SQQ average was an impressive 192p which given the mixed show is very pleasing. Don’t forget it is £/head that count and our average is £89.50! Sell live at Leek and get all your weight!

A very small entry but a solid trade. Best ewes sold to £114 per head from RJ Barber, Derby. Mules sold to £70-£80 for the better end. Overall average of £68 per head.

Rams not as easy as ewes to a top of £98 from Ian Archer, Elkstones to average £69.50.

Similar numbers of calves again this week with a few getting clear of the dreaded TB but new stories all the while of fresh outbreaks in the area. Trade generally buoyant with new faces to Leek bidding well on calves.

Generally an improved trade. 13 best bulls over £322 and a high of £385 for a grand Blue from J & CA & DN Tomlinson, Ford. Medium sorts £280 - £320 with younger or plainer sorts less.

A similar story to the bulls with more people looking for calves with trade largely unchanged on the week. Top calf today and making it a double (bulls/heifers) was Messrs Tomlinson, Ford realising £368 for their blue heifer. 10 best calves over £280 with mediums £200 - £270 and smaller heifers under £200.

Best bulls over £100 with a lovely bull from Messrs Maydew, Consall at £140. Medium rearers £70 - £90 with smaller rearer’s £45 - £60.
