A busy sheep shed again this week with the Easter Show & Sale of Spring Lambs! A brilliant entry forward with the champion lamb being a single 39kg lamb from RG & AS Williamson & family selling at 510p/kg (£198.90) to Lee Machin of Manifold Valley Meats, Grindon.

The monthly Pedigree sale saw a fab entry forward and a lovely trade with plenty of buyers forward. Top price of £2240 and £2140 for heifers from Norman Mellor & family, Earl Sterndale.

A shortage of barren and clean cattle forward today, despite the up in trade in the last couple of weeks. Top call of 130p/kg for a Friesian cow and a neat Limousin heifer at 220p/kg.

Similar story in the pig section, with a strong trade throughout, with top prices of 136p/kg for cutters and bacon pigs.

A brilliant days trading in the calf section with all averages up today, with plenty of buyers around the ring. Top price of £435 for a Blue bull calf.

A real shortage of cattle today for the strong trade on offer. Top call today of 130p/kg for a 620kg Friesian from J W Handford & Sons, Apenshaw with others to 128p/kg twice for a 810kg Holstein from JP & SR Slack, Whaley Bridge and for a 745kg Holstein from G E Brookes & Partners, Loxley.

Overall average of 109.58p/kg or £696.95.

Three overage steers from K J White, Swinscoe sold well as follows; 173p/kg for a 715kg Angus, 169p/kg f or a 670kg Angus and 166p/kg for a 730kg Hereford to gross £1236.95, £1211.80 and £1132.30.

A neat 475kg Limousin heifer realised 220p/kg for Mark Butler, Bagnall with other heifers at 180p/kg for a 475kg Charolais from D & G Tudor, Kingsley.

Steers topped at 187p/kg for a 510kg British Blue from George Wise, Audley, who also sold a 570kg British Blue at 185p/kg. D & G Tudor sold a 535kg Charolais steer at 185p/kg and another 550kg Charolais steer at 181p/kg.

Top headage price of £1054.50 for steers from George Wise and heifers for £1045 for Mark Butler.

A packed house at Leek for the April Pedigree Sale saw numerous buyers in attendance producing a buoyant trade from start to finish.

The sale started with a good run of 12 older milky cows from Border Holdings of Kenilworth. Up to 6th calvers they topped at £1490 and averaged right through a creditable £1274 which included an odd one with faults.

A powerful second calver by Welcome Armitage Pesky from the Broadley family of Hartington topped the cows at £1970 with an Ayrshire 3rd calver from the same home reaching £1580.

Quality heifers were much sought after and it was the Mellor family of Earl Sterndale who yet again took the top spot. A fabulous heifer again by Pesky was eventually clinched by Andrew Hulme of Basford at £2240 who also took a second also from the Mellors by Cogent Bill at £2140.


Regular vendors Mark and Lynne Hodgkinson also of Earl Sterndale had two heifers to £1910 and £1900.

8 month old heifers topped at £620 with Montbeliarde X bulling heifers in the commercial section reaching £900.

A much stronger trade for pigs this week, and not just the number forward which we have come to expect!

Pork pigs sold to 134p/kg for a pair of 73kg pigs from J & B Fentem & Sons with a pen of 3 at 110p/kg.

Cutting pigs sold to 136p/kg for a 84kg pigs from Jess Bailey, Cloudside with others at 134p/kg three times for 80kg, 84kg and 81kg pigs from J & B Fentem, Alsop.

Bacon pigs sold to 136p/kg for a pair of 100kg pigs from Chris Hine, with a air of 97kg pigs from Jess Bailey at 130p/kg and 126p/kg for 102kg pigs from Steve Bailey, Biddulph and also for 89kg pigs from J & B Fentem.

Heavy pigs sold to 134p/kg for an 111kg pigs from Andrew & Tim Carr, Waterfall.

Cull sows sold to 65p/kg for a 197kg sow from Marsden & Paddock, Eaves Lane who sold others at 62p/kg and 58p/kg.

A busy day in the sheep shed with towards 1200 head forward in total including the Easter Show and Sale of Spring Lambs. Thank you for the vendors and buyers for their patience.


A strong entry of Spring Lambs with the show being judged by Mr Danny Hill. He undertook the task very diligently with some very strong classes to consider. The Champion was eventually awarded to Robert & Andy Williamson & family of Wetley Rocks for an outstanding 39kg lambs. After competitive bidding, the lamb was sold at 510p/kg (£198.90) to Lee Machin of Manifold Valley Meats.

Away from the show, trade was generally steady with demand slow nationally as many lambs are ready due to the good spring. But still a lot of old season lambs about which are mopping up demand. Best lambs though 250p - 290p/kg with competitive bidding for the best types and an overall average of 239p/kg.

A solid entry saw a solid trade, generally looking better sold than the spring lambs, best sorts at 220p - 240p/kg and top headage prices of £116.08. a large proportion of store types sesulted in an average of 202p/kg. big lambs keenly bid for and plenty £100/head +.

A similar entry met a firm trade.

Best sold to £118 for very strong Texel’s from Paul Johnson and £116 from Martin & Charlotte Hall, Sheen.

Best Texel mules sold to £102, best Suffolks to £95 and better mules £75 - £82 and medium sorts £60-£70.

Overall average of £74.28.


A bigger entry than anticipated on a non-sale week saw a solid trade.

Ewes with lambs sold to £158 for continental ewes with doubles and singles to £132.

The majority of the netry was hard worked mule ewes which sold at £130 - £140 for doubles and £90 - £100 for singles.

A super trade with buyers galore and some super prices for all grades and breeds. Bulls topped at £435 for a super Blue from Peter Gilman, Thorncliffe. 14 best over £320, medium better sold at £240 - £300 with a handful of smalls under £200.

A smart Angus bull sold at £220 with the bulls averaging £157. Best of the heifers was an angus at £170 for Steven Ryder.
