Leek Market for Tuesday 16th February 2016

A busy day at Leek this week with 68 Barren cows selling up to 140p/kg with the overall average being a pleasing 87.88p/kg including a number of plainer cows. Quality butchers cattle topped at 208p/kg and more needed each week!

Butchers Hoggs were a slightly steadier trade but still comparing well with local and national trends up to 212p/kg and £101.33 per head.

A larger entry of calves with plenty of bidders seeing a top price of £370 for a Blue bull calf with reared calves to £480.

61 Dairies in the monthly Pedigree sale with trade similar to last week and continuing to hold up well considering the underlying turmoil in the milk industry. Top price this week was £1740 for a newly calved heifer from RD & AJ Lomas of Callow.

BARREN COWS (68);

A similar entry and a similar trade with the plainer cows again looking the best sold.

Top price of the day was 140p/kg being paid for a 610kg Limousin from Critchlow Bros of Sheen. Another Limousin from MD Critchlow, Tideswell weighed 665kg to realise 137p/kg and a 670kg Charolais from David Elliott sold for 124p/kg.

Black & White cows sold up to 115p/kg for a 810kg beast from Rushton Spencer and a 650kg beast from JJ & PN Holdcroft of Brown Edge exchanged hands for 108p/kg.

A British Blue cow at 675kg from HG Nutter of Grindon sold for 109p/kg and a 710kg British Blue from FW & JF Brookes of Uttoxeter sold for 105p/kg.

Overall average was 87.88p/kg. Top headage price of the day was £911.05 for MD Critchlows Limousin cow.

There was three stock bulls on offer selling to a top price of 111p/kg for a 815kg Limousin from EJ Beech, Cellarhead. A 900kg angus from RJ Clowes & Son of Kingsley sold for 98p/kg.

A short supply today with a good quality Limousin heifer from Robert Belfield selling for 208p/kg at 480kg. Another stabiliser heifer at 520kg from the same home sold for 169p/kg.

Bulls sold up to 157p/kg for a 535kg Welsh Black bull from Rushton Spencer with a 560kg Holstein bull selling for 156p/kg.

Top headage price was £998.40 for Robert Belfield’s Limousin heifer.

More quality cattle required each week to satisfy demands of retail and wholesale butchers who attend each week!!

There were plenty of buyers at the Leek Pedigree sale this week however trade was still cautious in line with previous weeks.

Top call was £1740 for a REW Seaver daughter shown by Richard Lomas of Callow. Giving 26kg she went to Geoff Brownsword of Brailsford.

Close behind at £1720 was Snowfern Jeeves Maribyl 2 from Messrs Fernihough. By Ked Outside Jeeves, her dam had given over 11645kg. She sold giving 29kg and went to Andrew Hulme of Basford.

An increased entry, more in line with what we would like every week, saw a solid trade and certainly better than many expected given reports from other centres.

Trade was back from last weeks flyer with all lambs perhaps 10p/kg back, but trade still very pleasing overall.

Big lambs topped at £101.33 with plenty in the £90 - £98 bracket. 53.5kg hoggs from Mr Torr of Bradnop sold to 188p to James’ Family Butchers of Baddeley Green.

The smartest sorts sold to 212p with plenty over 200p all being keenly bid for. Many more of these sorts could be handled every week.

A reasonable entry which consisted of some good Texel ewes all the way down to some £5 specials.

Texel ewes sold well up to £122 for Andrew Froggatt for some Blue Texel’s. Other Texel’s sold to £120 from David Williams. The top 10% average £109.84 per head. Plenty could be handled every week.

Mule ewes sold to £80 per head for the best with most in £65 - £75 bracket. Rams to £94 from Wayne Frith and Graham Jones.

Another good entry on a very cold February morning. Trade started strong from the start with Black & White bulls looking exceptionally well sold but the continental bull trade was a little less this week. Heifers as always a very strong price.

43 Continental Bulls av £261.30

The best still a good trade but second and third quality bulls less. 12 better bulls sold over £330 with a high of £370 for a super Blue from WE Turnock & Sons, Onecote. Medium bulls £250 - £320 with a number of smaller bulls (particularly Limousins) under £200.

36 Continental Heifers av £243.44

A cracking price once again with only a few small Limousin heifers affecting the average. The best 15 heifers sold over £290 wit ha top of £335 for a Blue from S & M Huxley, Talke. 11 mediums £230 - £260 with 10 smaller heifers less than £210.

11 best over £100 with a top price of £155 for a Freisian from P Massey & Son, Admaston and £140 for Ian Gregson, Hanbury. Medium rearers £60 - £90 with only a handful under £50.

A strong British Blue sold at £480 from Adam Shaw, endon with 3 Holsteins (3-4 mths) selling to £190 from James Harrison.
