Leek Market for Tuesday 20th March 2018

A good day at Leek Market following the wintery weekend. The Pedigree Dairy Sale saw a nice entry forward to a top of £2180 for a fresh heifer from James Harrison of Cheadle.

Prime sheep were an electric trade today with a shortage of stock everywhere in the country. Top prices of 296p/kg and £156.60 per head for hogget’s to average overall 234.85p/kg and £110.14 per head. Ewes sold to £132 and Ewes with lambs to £165.

A shortage of Barrens for the trade that was on offer with cows to 160p/kg for Holsteins and overall average at 116.71p/kg or £679.84 per head. A neat Blue heifer realised 207p/kg in the clean section.

More bite to the calf trade this week with returning faces around the ring and averages up across the board. Top call of £395 & £380 for Simmental bull calves from John Fernyhough.

A solid trade for pigs with top prices of 140p/kg (£128.33 per head) for bacon pigs.

A cracking trade for barren cattle today with a top of 160p/kg for a 575kg Holstein from E Morley & Sons, Derby with others at 142p for a 660kg Holstein from the same home with another at 142p/kg for a 685kg Montbeliarde from E Morten & Sons, Barmoor Clough, who had another at 140p/kg for a 545kg Holstein.

A 625kg Blonde from W Nixon of Congleton sold well at 138p/kg with a 585kg Holstein from John Plant, Bradnop realising 134p/kg.

An overaged steer from N Waring sold for 130p/kg for a 640kg Holstein to gross £832.

A 1055kg Limousin bull from W Nixon, Congleton sold well at 129p/kg to gross £1360.95.

A small entry of clean today, with a British Blue heifer at 470kg realising 207p/kg for P & PD Okill, Marton who also for another British Blue heifer for 184p/kg weighing 555kg.

Friesian young bulls sold well to 179p (475kg), 174p (495kg) and 173p (500kg) for J E Archer & Sons, Hilton.

Top headage price today of £1021.20 & £972.90 for heifers with bulls to £865 and Friesian steers to £916.50.

Although quality was distinctly lacking in the monthly pedigree sale this month the best sold exceptionally well with the best heifer just short of £2200 with numerous others £1900-£2000.

Topping the day was James Harrison of Cheadle with his heifer Newclose Ruth 105. By Morningview Levi her dam had given 8960kg back to a 11650kg G.Dam. Sold giving 35.5kg she caught the eye of Eric Parkes who took her home to Melton Mowbray. Her daughter by Topcroft Pesky Trix made £250 to Andrew Stone of Onecote. James also had his second heifer to £1920 to Keith and Heather Wilson of Crewe.

Cows peaked at £1900 for a second calver from the Broadley family of Hartington. She went to Messrs Mansell of Newport. Hot on her heels at £1880 was another second calver from the Stubbs family of Tissington.

Great support for the short notice herd dispersal saw an Ayrshire Cross heifer to £1100.

Next week we have the herd dispersal on behalf of the Ball family. A 50% block calving Autumn/Spring Herd the sale features many crossbreds including Fleckvieh and Norwegian Red.

A small entry forward today but a solid trade for the stock on offer.

Pork pigs at 71kg sold to 116p/kg for W Gregson, Preston, to gross £82.36. Cutting pigs sold to 116p/kg (£ 89.32) at 77kg from J & B Fentem & Sons who also sold 80kg pigs to 110p/kg (£88).

Bacon pigs topped at 140p/kg (£128.33) for 91.5kg pigs from W Gregson who had another pen at 134p/kg (£118.37). The Fentem family sold bacon pigs to 126p/kg (100kg) & 122p/kg (101kg).

Heavy pigs sold to 102p/kg (109.3kg) and 98p/kg (111kg) for J & B Fentem & Sons.

Only 2 cull sows forward today selling to 60p/kg (243kg) and 51p/kg (224kg) for Marsden & Paddock, Cheadle.

A seasonal entry with numbers short everywhere. Trade was through the roof up to 296p/kg or £156.60/head.

Best types all 270p and above with the top 5 pens averaging 284.8p. Big lambs selling to 290p for 54kg. 52kg and over averaged 227p or £126/head.

Overall average of £110.14 per head of 234.85p/kg with only one pen below 200p!

An excellent trade throughout to a top of £132 from David Goldstraw of Meerbrook for Texel ewes with others at £122 from the Lancaster family. The top 5 pens averaged £123.40.

Best mules selling £80 - £98 per head; Suffolk’s to £105. Many more could be sold each week.


Unsurprisingly only a small entry saw ewes with twins to £165 per family.

Similar numbers forward with more continental but less black & whites with a new buyer at the ringside pushing up prices across the board.

More bite to the trade with improved orders at ringside. Best calves good to sell as always. 10 best bulls topped £350 with a high of £395 and £380 for Simmental bulls from John Fernyhough, Swythamley. Mediums £280 - £340 with smaller and younger sorts generally £240 - £270.

Bulls a strong trade with Angus to £262 for F A Cotton, Tean who also had a heifer at £170. Steve Ryder had a Hereford heifer at £185.

23 Black & White Dairy Bulls av £58.47

Nearly all for processing today on four different accounts, therefore strong competition. Best bulls £65 plus and up to £115. Medium sorts £40 - £60 with 4 smaller bulls from £32.
