Leek Market for Tuesday 21st November 2017

A good days trading at Leek today with Dairies looking a better trade on the week with a fresh third calver from JR & DJ Hollingworth, Ockbrook at £2010.

Barrens for a similar trade with 95 forward and reaching a top price of 161p/kg for Blonde cattle from the Naden family, Cheddleton. A shortage of clean cattle today with a top call of 220p/kg for a neat Limousin heifer from Mark Butler.

Lambs were a more positive trade this week, with quality lambs up on the week to a top of 205p/kg, but a large proportion of slightly under finished lambs brought an overall average at 167p/kg.

A good show of calves forward today, despite the drop in numbers due to the time of year. Quality Limousin bull calves topped at £400 for R J Salt of Rudyard with Blue heifers to £365.

Pigs again were a decent trade with a nice show forward, topping at 142p for 93kg bacon pigs from J & B Fentem & Son, with In-pig gilts to £146.

Another good entry with plenty of buyers around the ring seeing a similar trade and atop price of 161p/kg for a 575kg Blonde from EM & CP Naden of Cheddleton with same vendor achieving 160p/kg for a 660kg Blonde.

A 745kg Simmental cow from M R Beardmore, Ipstones achieved 146p/kg with a 450kg Shorthorn from N & A Pancisi of Stanton at 132p/kg.

A 800kg Hereford Cow from David Elliott was particularly well sold at 130p/kg.

Top headage price was £1087.70 for a Simmental cow from M R Beardmore with Blonde cows up to £1056 for EM & CP Naden with Herefords to £1040.

Overall average of 93.43p/kg and £587.76 per head.

A 940kg Angus bull from A E Allcock of Waterhouses achieved 94p/kg.

Only a small entry with more cattle required!! Top price was 220p/kg for a 510kg Limousin heifer from Mark Butler with a 560kg British Blue heifer from AW & D Kennerley & Son at 190p/kg.

A commercial Hereford bull at 20 months was well sold at 141p/kg.

Top headage of £1122 and £1064 for heifers and £1015.20 for bulls.

THIRD CALVER TO £2010

WHOLE PEDIGREE ENTRY AVERAGED £1491

A tremendous trade today at the November Pedigree Sale saw a third calver top the day at £2010 and the entire entry average a superb £1491.

Regular vendor John Hollingworth took the top honours with his powerful cow Bartlewood Goldenboy Saga 5, by J2M Goldenboy, she had given 9466kg with her 2nd. She sold giving 48kg and went to a local purchaser with the same vendor also having a 37kg second calver to £1900.

Heifers topped at £1900 for Littonfields Hayden Poppy from Andrew & Bridget Weston of Litton. His entry of 4 heifers averaged an excellent £1793.

Ayrshires were in strong demand again today with a second calver from the Broadley family of Hartington to £1700. They also had a fourth calver to £1550 and a 21kg heifer to £1580.

In-calf heifer due in the New Year from John Allen of Tutbury reached £1320 with a 29 month old Pedigree Aberdeen Angus bull from the Lowe family to £1800.

A decent entry and a similar trade seeing pork pigs in short supply and achieving up to 126p/kg for a 66kg pig from angus Lockett with a pen from G & I Middleton of Dereham at 120p/kg.

Cutting pigs topped at 138p, 135p and 130p for J & B Fentem & Sons and S L Seabridge achieving 128p/kg and G & I Middleton at 122p.

Bacon pigs achieved up to 142p for a 93kg pig from J & B Fentem & Sons with a second pen at 140p and a pen from A I Grace at 140p/kg also.

Other bacon pigs sold up to 138p/kg form Chris Hine and also from J & B Fentem.

Heavy pigs topped at 138p/kg for a 117.5kg pig from Chris Hine with another at 136p.

Top headage price was £89.20 for Pork Pigs with cutters up to £110.36 for J & B Fentem with Baconer’s to £138 for Chris Hine.

Cull sows sold to 50p/kg for 242kg and 232kg sows from S Bailey, Biddulph.

In-pig gilts from Mr Lilwall from Walsall achieved £146 and £140 with store pigs to £42 for Angus Lockett.

A slightly reduced entry saw a much improved trade with best types selling particularly well. Multiple lots at 190p and above with the best to 205p from Ron Tomkinson of Butterton. Plainer types would be a similar trade to last week with a lot at 155p – 160p lacking the finish and style overall.

Overall average of £49.50 is very pleasing for the mixed sample on offer.

A big dip in numbers but trade remains strong and a total clearance as always.

All shapes and sizes represented with some excellent calves at the top end but some smaller sorts really affected the averages. 15 best topped £330 and a high of £400 for a tremendous Limousin from R J Salt, Rudyard. 15 mediums £280 - £320 with smaller sorts a little less.

Only a small entry that saw Hereford bulls at £275 for Messrs Brookes, Crakemarsh and an Angus heifer at £228 for B & B Partners, Lask Edge.

Good bulls over £100 with Friesians to £168 for Messrs Brookes. Medium rearer’s £50 - £80 with processing bulls generally £20 - £50.
