Another busy Tuesday at Leek, and making the most of the last day of sunshine this month. The dairy shed with prices up to £2480 and £2420 for some outstanding heifers from the Sternmoor herd.

Lambs continue to sell at pace, with a good entry forward, and selling to 233p/kg, with particular need to the best finished lambs. Overall average of 205.5p/kg. Cull ewes still a very firm trade, selling to £132 for Texels.

A few less barren & clean cattle about this week as we see trade slip slightly nationally, however leading prices of 188p/kg for a Blonde cow and clean to 190p/kg.

Calves in exceptional demand with plenty of quality and variety forward selling to £345 (3 times) for bulls and heifers to £305.

Pigs sold on a solid trade with good runs of finished pigs of a number of vendors, with a top of 128p/kg for bacon pigs.

A better trade for the cattle on offer, especially for stronger meated cows. Top price of 188p/kg for a 540kg Blonde heifer from B E Wain, Siddington and a 725kg Charolais to 146p/kg for RE Green, Ash Bank with black & white’s to 146p/kg for J R Johnson & Sons, Ipstones.

Top headage price of £1168 for the Friesian from J R Johnson, Ipstones, with Charolais to £1058.50 and Herefords to £1048.

Top price of 190p/kg for a 610kg British Blue heifer from R J Crichlow, Grindon, who also sold a 595kg British Blue heifer at 182p/kg, with a 810kg South Devon at 178p/kg for R E Green, Ash Bank.

Steers sold to 179p/kg for a 555kg Hereford from J S Hine, Biddulph Park.

Top headage price of £1441.80 for the South Devon and British Blues to £1159.

Another very busy day in the dairy shed saw 117 animals pass through the ring with a 100% clearance.

The day saw a superb trade for the very best with two exceptional heifers from the Sternmoor of Michael and Caroline Wainwright making £2480 and £2420 respectively, both purchased by Andrew Hulme of Basford.

Cows topped at £1790 for a commercial second calver from Richard Green of Whiston.

Youngstock were again a nice trade with the entry of commercial heifers from J G Bayley of Bilstone topping at £950.

Pigs sold on a solid trade, and a good entry of fat pigs forward.

Pork pigs sold to 108p/kg for a pen of five from A I Grace, High Bradfield.

Cutting pigs sold up to 118p/kg for 84kg pigs from J & B Fentem, who also sold cutters to 116p/kg, 110p/kg, 108p/kg, 104p/kg etc.

Bacon pigs from PF & PD Parsons topped the day at 128p/kg for a trio of 93kg pigs with 89kg pigs to 124p/kg for S Bailey, Knypersley, and the Fentems selling bacon pigs to 120p/kg (3 times), 119p/kg, 118p/kg (3 times), and the Parson family selling 103kg pigs at 120p/kg.

Heavier pigs sold to 120p/kg for a 107kg pig from PF & PD Parsons who sold other heavies at 118p/kg, 117p/kg, 115p/kg, 110p/kg etc with a 112kg pig at 118p/kg for JW Bailey, Cloudside.

A slightly smaller entry of lambs this week but still good numbers for the time of year. Generally not the quality of lambs today but some very good pens amongst the entry. Prime lambs are a very good trade for the time of year but lean and under finished lambs are better sold in the stores.

An overall average of 205.5p/kg or £86/head. Heavy lambs still in best demand, topping at £118.80 and average £100.50/head.

A good entry selling on a firm trade. Best Texel ewes selling to £132 and the better sorts £110 plus. Plenty of interest in leaner sorts both from grazing customers and killing buyers.

Overall average a very respectable £65.55.
