Leek Market for Tuesday 27th March 2018

A busy market with a full sheep shed with Spring Lambs being a cracking trade up to 565p/kg and £220.35 per head, with the entry averaging an outstanding £198 per head.

Butchers hogget’s continued at last weeks trade seeing a top of 304p/kg and £142.48 per head. A good show of cull ewes forward today with trade as sharp as previous weeks.

A full dairy shed today with the herd dispersal on behalf of IG & AJ Ball of Horton. A good ring full of buyers forward looking for fresh milk with commercial heifers to £1880.

More calves about this week, with trade still strong for the best types on offer but a little less money for second and third quality sorts. Blue bull calves topped at £448 and heifers to £299.

Barrens continue to be in excellent demand with plenty of competition, and more needed to satisfy the demand! Top prices of 135p/kg and £1080 per head.

Clean Cattle achieved up to 199p/kg for Black & White bulls at 580kg to gross £1154.20.

Butchers pigs were dearer on the week up to 154p/kg and £161.82 per head.

A smaller entry this week, and still not enough to satisfy demand here at Leek! Top price of 135p/kg three times for a 800kg Holstein from E Morten & Sons, Barmoor Clough, a 625kg Shorthorn from K & A Gould, Thorncliffe and a 730kg Limousin from A Turnock & Sons, Horton.

A 575kg Simmental from J G Derbyshire, Warslow achieved 131p/kg. who also sold a 595kg Limousin to 128p/kg and a 720kg Holstein from E Morten & Sons realised 128p/kg.

A 925kg Limousin bull from Critchlow Bros of Sheen sold well to 128p/kg, to gross £1184.

An excellent trade for the cattle on offer with Friesian young bulls from J E Archer & Sons, Hilton selling to 199p/kg (580kg), 180p/kg (495kg) and 172p/kg (535kg).

Three Angus steers from J R Hall, Endon sold to 178p/kg (490kg), 176p/kg (530kg) and 170p/kg (545kg).

Top headage price of £1154.20 for young bulls with steers to £932.80 and £926.50.

Top call within the commercial section today at £1880 was a 27kg heifer from Andrew Mills of Ratcliffe on Wreake with numerous others to £1700.

The herd sale on behalf of Ian & Jenny Ball attracted great interest with a fresh second calver topping the trade at £1460.

The cross breeds sold to a strong trade with large numbers travelling into Shropshire, and Cheshire.

A good entry, with pigs dearer on the week, and easy to sell.

17 cutting pigs forward today with a top of 134p/kg for 85kg pigs from J Davenport, Macclesfield. Overall average of 120.51p/kg or £95.98 per head.

30 Bacon pigs topped 154p/kg for J & B Fentem & Sons for 91kg pigs. Overall average of 136.23p/kg or £128.30 per head.

4 heavier pigs today topped 128p/kg for 95kg pigs from J & B Fentem & Sons. Overall average of 121.96p/kg or £132.02 per head.

A small selection of weaners today made £27 per head for A J Robinson, and £20 per head for B & J Ainley.

Four cull sows today topped at 62p/kg for a 261kg sow from Chris Hine.

A small pre-Easter entry saw an electric trade beyond any expectations!

Best lambs sold for 565p/kg for 39kg lambs from Rob & Andy Williamson with others at 555p/kg and 525p/kg, and 42.5kg from the same home at 510p/kg.

Other excellent lambs from the Wilson family of Hollington sold at 520p/kg for 38kg and 500p/kg for 34kg.

A good entry forward following the flyer last week met a strong and consistent trade. More numbers about nationally has eased trade very slightly but nevertheless a good trade followed particularly for the meated continental sorts regardless of weight.

Top price of 304p/kg for an outstanding pen from George Platt of Gawsworth. Best meated types 260p and above, with plenty of demand from start to finish.

Best big hogget’s sold to 270p/kg and top headage price of £142.48 with many grossing £120 - £140/head. Heavy hoggs averaged £121.head (45kg +).

Overall average of 231p.kg or £101/head which included a run of 70 horned lambs at 30 - 35kg and several lots of ‘end of season’ types.

A reasonable entry saw a fast trade in line with previous weeks.

Best heavy ewes selling to £120 and multiple pens over £100. Mules to £99 for big strong types.

Rams saw a solid trade up to £108, £108, £104 etc.

Overall average £75.40.


A first proper entry of ewes of lambs saw a limited number of perspective buyers given the lack of grass and unseasonal weather!

Nevertheless a solid trade was reported with best doubles to £158 and best singles to £128. Average of £52 per life being mostly broken mouth ewes.

Trade for the best is as fast as ever with 4 posh Blues topping £410 with Dale Allen’s trio at £448, £425 and £385 (all 6 weeks and well framed). Nigel Moss had £415 (40 days) and Andy Williamson at £410 (3 wks). 18 best over £310. Mediums £220 - £300 with smaller bulls under £200.

Not the dearest we have ever seen them but no less than last week. A super Blue from Andy Williamson sold at £299 with best Limousins at £292 for Fred Yates and a run of Blues from Wes & Giles Clark to £270, £265 etc. 17 best sold over £220, mediums £175 - £210 with smaller sorts around £150.

Only a handful of rearer’s up to £120 for Friesians from F J Gould & Son, Longnor. Best processors £60 - £80 with smaller sorts generally £30 - £50.

4-6 months old saw a trio of Angus heifers top at £280 per head for Michael Needham, Ipstones.
