Leek Market for Tuesday 29th March 2016

A quieter market for Easter Tuesday although there was another good show of Dairy cattle which sold up to £1500 for a newly calved heifer from TW & CM White & Sons of Shottle. There was an excellent company of buyers looking for additional dairy stock.

91 calves exchanged hands today with an excellent shaped Limousin heifer calf topped the market at £500.

57 Barren cows were a sharper trade with a new buyer in attendance seeing a top price of 134p/kg for a Simmental bull weighing 1110kg from J Fernyhough of Swythamley. A good shaped Limousin cow at 775kg from DW Harrison of Priestcliffe exchanged hands for 130p/kg.

A small entry in the sheep shed with butchers lambs up to 328p/kg and £124.64 per head with butchers hogget’s selling up to 220p/kg and £111.36 per head.

A decent entry with a new buyer in attendance seeing a top price of 134p/kg for an 1110kg Simmental bull for John Fernyhough of Swythamley.

Barren cows topped at 130p/kg for a 775kg Limousin cow from DW Harrison of Priestcliffe with another 460kg Limousin cow from EB & BM Sutton of Moreton selling for 112p/kg.

Black & White cows topped at 100p/kg for an 840kg beast from John Fernyhough of Swythamley. And also for a 705kg Holstein from GB Millington and 100p/kg also for a 785kg Brown Swiss cow from KJ White & Co of Swinscoe.

Overall average was 85.34p/kg and £556.71 per head. Top headage price was £1007.50 from Mr Harrison’s Limousin cow with stock bulls up to £1487.40.

Only a small entry with no good quality today. Top price was 140p/kg for a 655kg Hereford x steer from JR Hall of Endon with a 575kg Hereford x steer from the same vendor exchanged hands for 134p/kg.

Top headage price was £917 with others at £770.50.

Another very busy day this week including the dispersal for Mr Billy Waters of Upper Hulme and another artic load of cattle from the North.

Generally the trade for the best was quite good from start to finish with a top call of £1500 for a smart January calved, 31kg Holstein heifer from the White family at Coneygrange Farm, Shottle who are currently dispersing their milking herd.

The top 6 heifers averaged £1380 with the top cow at £1290 for the Wilson family of Castle Douglas.

There was exceptional support for Mr Waters splendid Shorthorns with his heifers topping £1380 and another at £1360 sold to Messrs Brocklehurst at Wincle and to a Cheshire vendor.

Within the in-calf section a run if late April to June calving heifers from Yorkshire vendor, Howard Lea topped at £960.

A small entry of Hogget’s and Lambs due to the Bank Holiday weekend. Top price of the day was 328p/kg for a pen of 38kg Spring Lambs from SA Hulme of Leek selling to JW Ash Butchers of Ball Haye Street, Leek.

Top price for Hogget’s today reached 220p/kg for Frank Heath of Pipe Gate, with an overall SQQ average of 201.41p/kg and £111.36 per head.
