Many farmers busy harvesting meant less numbers about this Tuesday. The dairy section saw the herd dispersal on behalf of Challans Partners, Yoxall seeing a large crowd of buyers forward and selling to £1970 and £1940.

A shortage of barren and clean cattle which seems to be the story in most centres but a solid trade for the stock on offer with Limousins to 138p/kg and clean to 193p/kg.

A large entry of pigs this week and a good trade with cutters and bacon pigs to 134p/kg and weaners at £35/head.

Light on sheep numbers this week and a solid trade, with more lambs required to fulfil orders. Top price of 251p/kg for lambs.

Similar story numbers wise in the calf section and a top price of £358 for a smashing blue heifer calf from George Wise.

Top price of 138p/kg for a smart 730kg Limousin cow from David Elliott, Tideswell.

A good show of cattle today, and a good trade despite reports of steadier trades elsewhere. Top price of 193p/kg for a 600kg British Blue heifer from R & YM Moss, Crewe with a 600kg Charollais heifer at 190p/kg from Rushton Spencer.

Steers sold to 190p/kg twice for a 495kg and 520kg Blonde from SP & EE Richardson, Ipstones. British Blue steers at 625kg and 630kg sold at 173p/kg for R & YM Moss, Crewe.

Young Friesian bulls sold to 163p/kg for a 605kg bull and 162p/Kg for 575kg nad 555kg bulls consigned from J E Archer & Sons, Hilton.

Top headage price of £1233 for an 685kg Angus heifer with other heifers to £1158 and £1140, steers to £1089.90 and £1081.25 with young bulls to £986.15.

The dairy shed was buzzing yesterday with plenty of buyers in attendance for the herd dispersal on behalf of the Challans family of Yoxall.

Trade was brisk from the start with Ray Turner topping the commercial section at £1910 for a 23kg heifer.

Numerous animals passed the £1700 mark within the herd sale peaking at £1970 for a fresh heifer with another close behind at £1940. By Larcrest Creative she was a March calved heifer giving 20kg.

Cows within the sale peaked at £1850 for a fresh second calver with others to £1800.

In-calf heifers reached £1300 with bulling heifers to £800.

Next week we already have an entry of 12 fresh heifers from the Johnson family of Longnor (See photo below) and 4 fresh British Friesian heifers from Messrs Potter with many more expected. If you have entries don’t forget to contact Nola on (01889) 562811.

Biggest entry of pigs in a long time and trade on par with previous weeks.

Pork pigs sold to 124p/kg for 75kg pigs from A I Grace, High Bradfield who sold another pen of 74kg pigs at 116p/kg.

Cutting pigs sold to 134p/kg for 82kg pigs and 80kg pigs from PF & PD Parsons & Partners, Redbrook.

A large entry of bacon pigs sold to 134p/kg twice for 94kg pigs from Chris Hine, Biddulph and 90kg pigs from JA & B Minshull, Buxton. 97kg and 87kg pigs from J & B Fentem sold to 132p/kg with the whole entry averaging 117.95p/kg!

Heavy pigs sold to 110p/kg for 110kg pigs from J & B Fentem, Alsop with others to 94p/kg for 107 kg pigs from P & N Allen, Uttoxeter.

Cull gilts sold to 82p/kg for a 243kg gilt from W & FM Slack, Macclesfield with sows to 73p/kg for a 148kg sow from G & I Middleton, Dereham. Boars sold to 55p/kg for a 289kg boar from W & FM Slack.

A pen of 5 stores sold at £35 from R Myatt, Oldham, with in-pig sows to £185 and a sow with 5 piglets at £185.

Light on numbers as may be expected given the weather but trade very solid and exceeding pre-sale expectations significantly.

Best on offer very well bid for to a top of 251p/kg or £111 per head. All stock very well bid for on the day and many more could be sold with some regular orders unable to get started.

Overall average a useful 200p/kg.

Generally a good trade with bidders for all shapes, breeds and sizes. A tremendous George Wise Blue sold at £358 (highest price today!). top 6 over £250, mediums £170 - £230 with smalls under £160.

One of the very best Angus bull calves seen for a while sold at £340 (23 days) for C Jackson & sons, Butley with the better bulls generally £220 plus. Heifers sold to £170 for both Angus and Hereford with better sorts generally over £130. A trio of part reared Hereford heifers sold at £305/head (3 mths) for Robinson Partners, Rudyard.
