Leek Market for Tuesday 5th December 2017

A successful show and sale of Christmas Primestock with only a small show of cattle but some pleasing results. The Champion was shown by Matthew Tomlinson of Muggington being a 605kg Limousin heifer which sold for 460p/kg to gross £2783 to Manifold Valley Meats of Grindon and the reserve and Small Holder Champion being shown by Wayne Smith of Cheddleton being a 555kg which achieved 400p/kg to Steven Woolley of Woolley Brothers, Sheffield.

The first placed Cow shown by Les Elkin sold in Barren section at 156p/kg for a 925kg Limousin to gross £1443.

The Champion Pigs where shown by Phillip Nadin of Meerbrook being a pen of Bacon pigs which sold to Manifold Valley Meats for 300p/kg or £265.50 per head.

A great show of Lambs forward today for the Primestock with the Champion being a pair of Texel’s from Frank Heath of Pipe Gate which sold for 460p/kg to Manifold Valley Meats to gross £225.40.

A nice show of Dairies forward today topping at £1900 for a heifer from John Hollingworth of Ockbrook. Don’t forget to get your entries in for the Dairy Christmas Show & Sale in two weeks.

Calves were a good trade again and sharper on the week with 152 forward to top £378 for a British Blue bull from FA & TM Cotton, Tean.

A smaller entry with a strong trade and plenty of competition.

Top price was 171p/kg for a 595kg 33 month old Simmental from Rushton Spencer.

The prize winner cow was shown by Les Elkin and was a 925kg Limousin which sold for 156p/kg with a 735kg Limousin cow from Rushton Spencer at 150p/kg.

A 650kg Charolais x cow from Gerald Grindey was well sold at 127p/kg with a 910kg Holstein cow from DJ & KL Leadbetter at 125p/kg.

Several other cows sold over 100p/kg to result in an overall average of 102.84p/kg.

Top headage price was £1443 for the first prize Limousin cow from Les Elkin with Holsteins up to £1137.50 and Simmentals to £1102.50.

A 34 month Ayrshire steer at 720kg achieved 155p/kg with a 1175kg Hereford bull being well sold at 105p/kg. top headage price was £1233.75 for the Hereford bull.

A 490kg Limousin heifer from Mark Butler achieved 230p/kg.

Commercial cattle sold to 152p/kg for a 620kg Simmental heifer from K G Goodfellow of Adlington with a 490kg Hereford heifer from Thorley Brothers achieving 144p/kg.

A shorthorn cross bull at 510kg was well sold for 149p/kg.

A nice entry forward today saw a top price of £1900 for a Ardnesalem Booken Pride daughter from John Hollingworth of Ockbrook. She was clinched by Fred Yates of Longford.

Next in line at £1680 was a 27kg heifer from Andrew Mills of Ratcliffe on the Wreake.

A pleasing show of Butchers Pigs with every pen full.

A full compliment of buyers saw a top price for the Champion’s of 300p/kg from Phillip Nadin of Meerbrook for a pen of bacon pigs to gross £265.50 per head, purchased by Lee Machin of Manifold Valley Meats.

Pork pigs topped at 218p/kg for the first prize pen again from Phillip Nadin with others up to 166p/kg from same home and 138p/kg for a pen from J & B Fentem & Sons.

Cutters topped at 170p/kg for the first prize pen from J & B Fentem & Sons with a second pen from the same home at 140p/kg and a third pen at 136p/kg.

Other bacon pigs achieved up to 250p/kg for a 98kg pig from Roy Critchlow with a pen from P Nadin at 152p and 150p and bacon pigs from J & B Fentems sold up to 140p and 134p.

Heavier pigs sold up to 120p/kg for a 108kg pig from Steve Bailey and for a pair of 105kg pigs from same vendor.

Top headage price was £160.03 for pork pigs from P Nadin with cutters up to £131.75 from J & B Fentem and bacon pigs up to £265.50 for the Champion pen with a single pig from Roy Critchlow grossing £245.

A good show of cull sows with the prize winner being a 277kg sow from G Shepherd of Derby achieved 70p/kg to gross £193.90 with Wendy Stamper achieving up to 58p/kg for a 188kg sow to average £113.48 and 49.26p/kg.

Two pens of store pigs from Rosie Watson were an improved trade up to £40 and £37 per head.

A good entry forward for the Annual Christmas Show & Sale. The show was kindly judged by Karl James of W James family butchers of Baddeley Green. He undertook the task very thoroughly and professionally and our thanks to him.

The Champion of the day went to Mr Frank Heath of Pipe Gate, Market Drayton who is a regular vendor. His 49kg Champion pen sold for 460p/kg to gross a massive £225.40 per head. They were purchased by Lee Machin of Manifold Valley Meats who is again a regular supporter. Our thanks to all vendors, sponsors, staff and buyers for making the show a success.

Fewer commercial lambs on offer with some regular vendors deciding to skip show week saw a selective trade. Best sorts 190p - 200p, however many other 160p - 180p depending on weight which could be back on the previous week.

Overall average of 173.24p.


A reasonable entry saw a very strong trade. Best sorts to £112 for a pen of Texel’s from David Williams. Other Texel’s at £110, £100. Best Mules £65 - £75, and Welsh ewes £35 - £40.

Overall average of £60.29 for a mixed sample is a clear indication of a very strong trade.

Nearly half the number on offer and best sorts like hens teeth. 10 best topped £320 with Blues topping the markets and selling to £378 for one of a wonderful run from the Cotton family, Tean. Mediums £250 - £310 with younger or plainer bulls under £200.

A good trade with buyers for all shapes and sizes. A tremendous good angus led the way at £290 for the Cotton family. Better bulls generally over £200. Heifers topped at £195 for Angus and £170 for Herefords from DRK Agriculture, Lower Withington.

Best rearing sorts sold over £80 with Holsteins to £152, Friesians to £145 and Monty’s to £158. Medium rearer’s £60 - £80 with processing bulls generally £25 - £60.
