Leek Market for Tuesday 7th November 2017

A good entry of Barren cows with trade similar to last week seeing a top price of 156p/kg and £1099.80 per head with a full complement of buyers. Quality clean cattle topped at 223p/kg and £1349.15 and more well finished cattle required each week!!

Butchers lambs were dearer on the week selling up to 199p/kg and £92.15 per head with best ewes to £100.

Less calves and more buyers around the ring seeing a top price of £412 for a British Blue bull calf from FA & TM Cotton of Tean and £410 for a British Blue bull from J R Mosedale & Son of Longford.

A mixed quality entry of Dairies today with fresh heifers up to £1700 with a total of 64 on offer.

Butchers pigs were dearer on the week up to 154p/kg and £156.95 per head with plenty of buyers in attendance.

A very pleasing entry with the usual ring full of buyers,

Top price was 156p/kg paid for a 705kg Simmental cow from Forsbrook with another 720kg Simmental cow from the same vendor at 150p/kg.

A well-shaped Limousin cow from D M Elliott of Tideswell at 730kg exchanged hands for 149p/kg with a 650kg Limousin from G W Mycock & Son of Alstonefield at 144p/kg.

Other Limousins from the same vendor sold up to 142p/kg for a 645kg Limousin and 135p/kg for a 605kg Limousin.

An overaged clean steer from Messrs Mycock at 700kg sold well for 148p/kg.

Overall average was 99.92p/kg which reflects the larger number of plainer cows on offer, but trade similar on the week.

A small entry included some good quality butchers cattle selling up to 223p/kg for a 605kg British Blue heifer from J Mellor of Lask Edge with a 480kg Limousin heifer from Mark Butler selling well at 217p/kg and a 565kg Limousin heifer from JH & MR Rushton of Uttoxeter at 185p/kg/

A decent 675kg British Blue steer from J Mellor of Lask Edge achieved 197p/kg.

Top headage price was £1349.15 for the 605kg British Blue heifer from J Mellor of Lask Edge with other heifers up to £1045.25 for JH & MR Rushton and steers to £1329.75.

More quality clean cattle required each week!

A very mixed quality forward on Tuesday saw a top price of £1700 for a 30kg heifer from Richard Scott of Derby.

Next in line at £1620 was a British Friesian from the Webster family of Tissington. She went to Messrs Hudson of Ipstones.

£1590 clinched a 32kg heifer for John Rowlinson of Gawsworth from Messrs Bradbury of Kingsley. Hot in pursuit at £1580 was a 30kg heifer from Eric & Oliver Easom which went to Andrew Rushton of Blithbury.

A good firm trade with a full complement of buyers seeing cutting pigs up to 148p/kg from J Davenport of Macclesfield with J & B Fentem & Sons up to 143p/kg and 139p/kg.

Bacon pigs topped at 154p/kg for a pen from Chris Hine with others up to 152p/kg for Steve Bailey and 146p/kg from J & B Fentem & Sons.

Heavier pigs sold up to 146p/kg for a 108kg gilt from Chris Hine.

Top headage price was £122.84 for cutting pigs from J Davenport with others from Fentems at £120.48.

Bacon pigs sold up to £151.11 from J & B Fentem with Chris Hine realising £150.15.

Heavier pigs sold up to £156.95 for Chris Hine.

Cull sows from JW & B Bennett of Abbotts Bromley at 196kg sold to 54p/kg with a 213kg sow at 48p/kg.

Store pigs topped at £41 for a pen of J L R Ball of Sandbach with others from Steven proctor at £40 and a second pen from J L R Ball at £39.

A shame we did not have more about as trade was a lot sharper than a week ago with new orders for meated lambs.

Best types just shy of 200p/kg with best shaped lambs 190p – 199p. more could have been sold to the vendors advantage.

Meated sorts in excess of 180p all day and many more required. Best big lambs sold to 195p and top headage of £92.15.

A big drop in number s as the autumn rush comes to an end. Quality calves thin on the ground today and commanded a super price.

59 Continental Bulls av £270.74

A few quality calves on offer and very strong bidding on these that saw 10 over £360 including a trio over £400 with Messrs Cotton, Tean at £412; J R Mosedale at £410 and S & M Huxley at £408. Medium bulls £270 - £330 with a few smalls under £200.

Good money with 12 better sorts over £80 with a strong sort (2 mths) from Stanier & Carnwell at £225. Mediums £50 - £80 with only 6 smalls under £50.
