Leek Market for Tuesday 8th March 2016

A busy day at Leek Market with 346 cattle on offer and 625 sheep on offer.

There was an excellent entry of Dairies with two dispersals including one from the Scottish Borders. There was a very pleasing company of buyers around the ring and trade was considered to be good considering the underlying milk prices. Top price was £1720 for a newly calved heifer from WR Wilson & Son of Castle Douglas.

A decent show of Butchers lambs achieved up to 234p/kg for Texel cross lambs from R&S Bailey of Rushton Spencer to average 194p/kg overall. Ewes were also well sold up to £119. Don’t forget the Spring Show & Sale of Lambs on 22nd March 2016 as well as the first sale of Ewes with lambs at foot.

An entry of clean cattle sold up to £1100 for a Limousin heifer from Rob Belfield with 75 Barren cows up to £845 to average £512.89 including a high proportion of small leaner animals.

Calves continued at recent rates with 126 on offer with a Simmental bull calves up to £290 for David Swinson of Rushton up to £320.

A decent show of Barren cows with a good company of buyers in attendance. Unfortunately the electric supply to the market failed mid way through the sale resulting in the majority of the cows being sold in the lump.

Top price of the day was £845 for a Holstein from WE Turnock & Sons with SJ Potts receiving £800 for a Friesian cow. £795 was paid for a Holstein from PF Hulse of Consall and £775 for a Holstein from J&R Maydew of Consall.

A small entry of clean cattle with a 20 month old Limousin heifer from Robert Belfield selling for £1100 and a 22 month old Limousin heifer from the same home sold for £990.

A 25 month old Bazadaise heifer from CH Leeson of Ipstones exchanged hands for £990.

A 21 month old Hereford bull from Rushton Spencer exchanged hands well for £985 and a Shorthorn 30 month old steer from the same vendor exchanged hands for £780 with the vendors being well pleased.

A large entry of 70 commercials forward and then the herd dispersal on behalf of David Stanley to finish to day.

A lovely consignment from Messrs Wilson of Castle Douglas topped the day at £1720 twice over, both for heifers. The first by Stierkalf giving 36.1kg and went to Geoff Millington of Wincle. He also took the second at the same money, giving 32.8kg.

Cows from the same home peaked at £1670. Giving 47.4kg, she was a second calver by Huddlestoone Spooky. There entry of 35 averaged a creditable £1158.

Other heifers reached £1670 twice over which included a red and white from regular vendor Andrew Mills of Ratcliffe on Wreake.

A fantastic entry of 90 already entered for the Pedigree sale with catalogues available online in due course.

A fair entry met a very pleasing trade. Many thanks to both vendors and buyers for your patience as matters were held up due to a power cut.

Best hoggs were the best trade today with an endless demand for those best sorts at 210p/kg and over. Top price was 234p/kg from Roger & Simon Bailey weighing 47.6kg, to gross over £111 per head. Top headage today of £111.60 from Peter Jeffery of Sudbury for 62kg hoggs.

Plenty of big best end lambs grossing over £100 per head today. Top 10 pens averaged 219p/kg and an SQQ average of 194p/kg would take some beating given the mixed entry overall.

A very mixed sample but the best were well bid for. Top price of £119 was for Texel ewes from WR Leese of Eccleshall.

Overall average of £53.59 due to some smaller, hill types forward.

The same number of calves as last week with a slightly improved trade with a few more faces around the ring.

Best Friesian bulls topped at £135 for Ian Gregson of Hanbury with Shorthorns at £125 and Holsteins to £104. 6 best over £100, mediums £60 - £80 with smaller calves for processing £15 - £40.
