Another busy week at Leek Market, with good numbers in all section. A nice show of dairies forward sold to £1890 for a fresh Friesian heifer from M Jones, Oswestry, and a second calver to £1740.

More cattle forward in the barren section saw a large proportion of plainer cows, and best black & whites to 120p/kg. Less clean cattle about selling to 170p/kg.

A good turnout of butchers lambs again this week, with trade back on the week, following large numbers of lambs about nationally as usually found this time of year. A top of 185p/kg with cull ewes to £92.

Similar numbers of calves forward and trade more brisk this week, with a few returning buyers around the ringside. Top of £405 for a strong Blue heifer calf.

Pigs remain a firm trade here at Leek, with 107 forward and a top of 150p/kg for bacon pigs, and cutters to 148p/kg. Cull sows topped at 87p/kg, with weaners to £45/head.

BARREN COWS (73);

Selling time – 10:00am

A great number forward but a shortage of any quality beef sorts in the entry and a lot of plainer cows, and trade slightly easier on the week which has had an effect of the average.

Top price today of 120p/kg for a 655kg Friesian from A P Wain, Draycott, with a 765kg Holstein at 117p/kg from N A Bonsall, Stanshope and 116p/kg for a 775kg Holstein from A & J E Goldstraw, Waterhouses.

Limousins sold for 116p/kg for a 635kg cow from N A Bonsall, and Angus’ to 116p/kg for a 805kg cow from Hambleton Bros, Calton.

114p 705kg Holstein - IJ & AM Barks, Blackshaw Moor

113p 750kg Holstein - W Bradbury, High Needham

113p 830kg Holstein - WG & J Clark, Bradnop

111p 705kg Friesian - FR & VA Sims, Macclesfield

Top headage price of £968.35 for a 905kg Holstein from John Hughes, Cheddleton, with other Holsteins to £943.40 and £937.90, with Angus’ to £933.80.

Overall average of 91.86p/kg or £579.94

A number of overage steers forward sold to 138p/kg for a 695kg Simmental from N Beswick, Rudyard who also sold a 505kg British Blue for 136p/kg. K J White & Co, Swinscoe from two steers being a 770kg Angus for 129p/kg and a 770kg South Devon at 128p/kg. Top headage price of £993.30 for the Angus steer.

CLEAN CATTLE (10);

Similar story to the barrens with no better quality clean forward and trade a bit lacklustre as can be seen it other outlets with current market conditions.

A top of 170p/kg for a 605kg British Blue steer with other steers to 159p/kg for a 585kg British Blue from Nathan Beswick, Rudyard.

Young bulls sold to 159p/kg for a 610kg Black & White and 150p/kg for a 565kg similar bull.

Top headage price of £1028.50 for steers and bulls to £969.90.

DAIRIES (47);

A smashing trade for milkers on Tuesday saw a pure British Friesian heifer by Catlane Chad from Malcolm Jones of Oswestry top the day at £1890 to Frank Worsley of Chapel en le Frith. He also had a cross bred second calver to £1740 and a Guernsey x heifer to £1710.

Heifers from the Stone family of Onecote reached £1800 and £1700 respectively.

A big entry forward already for next weeks Pedigree sale. Catalogues will be available online on Thursday.

PIGS (107);

A decent trade again for pigs, with cull sows selling better than ever at the moment.

Pork pigs sold to 120p/kg for a pen of three 74kg pigs from J & B Fentem, with a pen of four 73kg pigs from G & I Middleton realising 108p/kg.

Cutting pigs topped at 148p/kg for an 81kg pigs from PF & PD Parsons, Redbrook, with a trio of 80.5kg pigs realising 146p/kg for J & B Fentem and 140p/kg twice for similar pigs from the same home.

Bacon pigs sold to 150p/kg for an excellent pair of 91.5kg pigs from the Fentem family, with others to 148p/kg for a 91kg pigs from PF & PD Parsons, and 144p/kg, 142p/kg, and 138p/kg for baconers from the Fentem family.

Heavy pigs sold to 132p/kg for a pen of four 114kg pigs from J R Mosedale, Longford, with an 107kg pigs at 122p/kg from J W Bailey, Cloudside, and 110p/kg for a 110kg pig from M R Banham, Bromsgrove.

Cull sows sold to 87p/kg for a 315kg sow from G & I Middleton, Dereham, with a 242kg sow at 83p/kg and a 218kg sow at 81kg, both from A Worth, Marton.

Three pens of weaners forward sold to £45 for G Walker, Redditch, and £38 for a pair from R S bowers, Twemlow. A pen of 8 sold for £34 for I G Foster & Son, Burton.

BUTCHERS LAMBS (837);

A smaller entry as expected following a busy store sale Saturday, saw a slower trade, as is being experienced nationally. Best meated sorts in short supply with some orders unable to get started.

Best on offer sold to 185p/kg with best sorts generally 180p +. Big lambs in best demand, but very few 50kg + lambs on offer.

Overall average 157p/kg.

CULL SHEEP (194);

A modest entry with a very large proportion of lean/grazing ewes forward, which sold well but resulted in a less exciting average than we have been used to.

Best Texel mules sold to £92. Best mules back on the week, to top at £68 but back about £5 on the week.

33 Native Bred Calves Named Herefords and Angus calves saw local rearing men bidding briskly with Angus to £242 and Herefords to £198. A large proportion of young plainer Angus calves were still keenly bid for but did reflect in the overall averages. 32 Black & White Bulls Very few rearing black & whites on offer saw best sorts to £52 with the Holsteins averaging £29.67.
