A quieter Tuesday, but plenty of trade about, especially for sheep, with butchers hogget’s to 237p/kg with an SQQ average of 215p/kg! Ewes also in very high demand selling to £139.

Dairies sold to £2080 for a heifer from John Allan, Tutbury with cows to £1660. Don’t forget Pedigree week next Tuesday, catalogues will be available soon.

A good number of barren cattle forward, with black & whites to 120p/kg and bulls to 116p/kg, and average of 91.47p/kg.

A shortage of fat pigs, but those forward sold well topping at 138p/kg for bacon pigs and weaners to £50/head.

A real shortage of calves, but a superb trade for those who brought in stock with a top of £365 for a British Blue bull calf and Heifers to £300.

A good number of cattle forward, and a decent trade for the qualities on offer. Shortage of better beef cattle forward, with black & whites to 120p/kg for a 690kg Friesian from R & M Green & Sons, with a 610kg Holstein realising 118p/kg for J & R Maydew, Consall.

Top headage price of £1028.50 for the 935kg Holstein from G P Broadsmith, with others at £880.

Overall average of 91.47p/kg or £654.79.

A Simmental bull weighing 1060kg sold for 116p/kg (£1229.60) from John Fernyhough, Swythamley.

CLEAN CATTLE;

Selling time – 10:45am approx.

A real shortage of clean today, with a 460kg Limousin steer realising 159p/kg from FW & RC Hodgkinson, Gawsworth, and two Holstein bulls weighing 660kg to realise 149p/kg and 590kg to realise 148p/kg from AW Kennerley & Son, Betley.

DAIRIES (34);

Selling time – 11:00am

Auctioneers – Meg Elliott (07967 007049) & Mark Elliott (07973 673092) Quality was a little mixed on Tuesday with trade a touch easier than on previous weeks.

Top heifer however still passed the £2000 mark with a Monument Impression daughter from the Leaventhorpe herd of John Allan reaching £2080.

Other heifers were to £1870, £1820 and £1800 respectively from John Hollingworth, David Cotton and Andrew Mills.

Cows reached £1660 for a strong second calver from the Gallimore family, Kingstone.

In-calf heifers reached £1360 with a group of bulling heifers to £640, to average £626.

PIGS (89);

As seen in other sections, there was a shortage of fat pigs on offer this Tuesday, with a large number of weaners making up the entry.

Pork pigs sold to 118p/kg for a 75kg pig from J & B Fentem, Alsop en le Dale.

Cutting pigs topped at 126p/kg for a 78kg pig from the Fentems, who sold other cutters at 124p/kg, 120p/kg and 118p/kg.

Bacon pigs sold to 138p/kg for a pair of 97kg pigs from J Davenport, Gawsworth, with others at 126p/kg for 87kg pigs from J & B Fentem, who sold others at 124p/kg twice and PF & PD Parsons, Whitchurch sold 102kg pigs at 122p/kg, and 122p/kg also being achieved for 98kg pigs from J Davenport.

Cull sows sold to 74p/kg for a 285kg sow from PF & PD Parsons, and two sows at 68p/kg and 64p/kg from JW & B Bennett, Abbots Bromley.

BUTCHERS HOGGETS (553);

A seasonal entry, not helped by the adverse weather over the last couple of days.

Trade was exceptional from start to finish and more than double could have been sold, with many orders not entirely filled!

Best sorts regularly 225p - 237p/kg with S J Pace & Co,

Congleton topped the trade.

SQQ average of 215p/kg indicates the excellent level of demand throughout and an overall average of 209p/kg!!

Very disappointing numbers but trade fantastic with buyers wanting the calves.

Trade very good as is the case at present. 5 best topped £330, all blues with a high of £365 for Messrs Clowes.
