Leek Market Report for Tuesday 14th June 2016

A busier market with a herd dispersal in the dairy section from Andrew Titterton seeing Dairies up to £1310 for a newly calved heifer from C & J Southwell & Son.

An excellent show of 213 calves achieved up to £375 for a Limousin bull calf from C E Hine of Biddulph with heifers selling up to £350 with again a packed ring of buyers looking for all types of calves.

Barren cows were a similar trade selling up to 128p/kg with stock bulls up to £1091.25 and a good ring full of buyers.

Clean cattle were a better enquiry with vendors satisfied with the prices achieved selling up to 185p/kg for HG & P A Whitehurst, Cheadle.

Butchers lambs were still in short supple in keeping with other centres. Top price was 228p/kg for good quality Texel lambs from R G & A S Williamson bought by Leek butchers, H Meakin & Son.

A good firm trade throughout with a top price of 128p/kg for a 590kg Angus cow from R W Shufflebottom from Upper Hulme with a 705kg Longhorn cow selling particularly well at 116p/kg from K & M Ede of Checkley.

A 675kg Black & White cow sold for 115p/kg for Foker Grange Farm Ltd and a 595kg cow from the same vendor sold for 114p/kg.

A 755kg Holstein from J P & S L Hotchin of Parwich achieved 110p/kg and an 810kg Black & White from D R & A Shuker of Bosley at 109p/kg.

Top headage price of the day was £882.90 for a Black & White’s and £817.80 for Mr Ede’s Longhorn. Overall average for cows was 84.82p/kg.

An 1125kg Hereford bull from T Johnson exchanged hands for £1091.25.

No best quality clean cattle with commercial heifers up to 185p/kg for a 575kg Limousin heifer from H G & P A Whitehurst & Son with a 595kg Charolais heifer from the same home at 184p/kg and a 600kg British Blue heifer from David Elliott at 180p/kg.

An entry from Geoff Forrester of Abbotts Bromley sold up to 176p/kg for a 515kg British Blue heifer and 162p/kg for a 485kg Hereford heifer.

A Hereford steer from the same vendor sold up to 166p/kg at 535kg with a 695kg Angus steer from R W Shufflebottom at 164p/kg.

Top headage price was £1139.80 for Angus steers with heifers to £1094.80 and Holstein bulls up to £865.15.

Another busy day at Leek Dairy Centre saw 162 head pass through the ring with 100% clearance rate on the day.

Although no silly prices the trade was a few gears swifter than in previous weeks with the quality on offer selling really well.

Topping the day at £1310 was regular vendor Peter Southwell of Great Haywood, Stafford with a lovely run of British Friesian heifers. He also had a second to £1280.

Close behind the top price at £1290 was a pretty heifer from the Peach’s of Warslow.

In-calf heifers peaked at £1290 from Andrew Mills of Ratcliffe on Wreake.

The herd dispersal peaked at £1040 with others to £1030.

A quieter day than expected with the weather perhaps not being very encouraging to gather lambs.

Trade nationwide is steadier this week but we still saw spirited bidding for the best and a very commendable average of 186.2p/kg for the entry as a whole. Top headage price of £94 per head.

Old season lambs saw a more difficult trade to a top of £78.40.

More lambs require every week!

A modest entry saw a solid trade for the goods on offer. Rams sold to £100 per head and Texel ewes to £87 from Mr Clarkson of North Rode.

Many more could be sold each week!


A small entry but some good outfits on offer saw plenty of bidders. Top price of £198 for broken mouth Texel’s with doubles. Still plenty of demand if you have sheep to sell!

A fantastic turn out of calves, nearly double last weeks entry selling to a good crowd of potential purchasers with 57 different vendors today including a few new ones trying us for the first time.

65 Continental Bulls av £270.35

A massive entry and a good trade with the best just as well sold but a number of smaller sorts, particularly Limousins win today’s entry. 17 best bulls sold over £340 with a high of £375 for a Limousin from C E Hine. 20 mediums £270 - £330. Smaller sorts £200 - £250 with a few plainer bulls under £200.

The average just a bit less but more down to quality than trade. 17 Best heifers topped £280 with a superb Limousin from N E Goodwin at £350. Medium heifers £200 - £270 with smaller sorts under £200.

37 Native Calves

Good competition for the natives with Hereford bulls topping at £298 for Messrs Burton, Ipstones while Angus bulls sold at £278 for S Ryder, Dilhorne. Heifers again sold well to average £162 with a high of £222 for a Hereford from P A & J Swindell, Chelmorton.

36 Black & White bulls av £57.44

Best bulls still nicely over £100 with a top of a superb £220 for a fantastic Friesian from W Maskery & Son, Mappleton. Medium rearer’s £60 - £90 with processing claves £20 - £50 depending on size.

Reared Calves

Just a few saw 4 Monty’s (2 mths) selling at £302 while a Simmental from the same home made £345.
