The sunshine has sprung upon us and a quieter market due to many farmers making the most of the weather. The barren section saw a strong trade once again with all types very much in demand! Top of 142p/kg and £1086.30/head. Clean sold to 186p/kg for a Limousin bull.

Old season hogg’s were a scorching trade this week, with heady heights of £168.48/head and averaged £103 head throughout with all weights wanted! Spring lambs sold to 286p/kg, with good demand for handy weights. Cull ewes topped at £114 and Ewes with doubles at foot to £210/family.

A solid trade for dairy cattle this week, ahead of a bumper entry for the next weeks pedigree sale. Heifers sold to £1750 for Roger Godber, Morley.

A great turnout of pigs this week and a brisk trade throughout with averages up across the board. Top price of 162p/kg for porkers and 160p/kg for cutters!

One of the best trades seen in a long time in the calf shed with plenty of returning buyers looking for all types and qualities. Although no show stoppers today, bulls topped at £348 and heifers to £295.

Another excellent trade for barren cattle this week with a top of 142p/kg for a 765kg Limousin from BJ & BW Brunt & Sons, Wincle.

Black and whites sold to 136p/kg for a 565kg Holstein from W E Turnock & Sons, Onecote and Angus’ to 132p/kg from T & E Walker & Sons, Saverley Green.

Overall average of 111.39p/kg or £727.07 per head.

Top headage price of £1086.30 for the Limousin from the Brunt family, Wincle, with Angus to £976.80 and black & white’s £955.90, with South Devon’s at £953.55.

CLEAN CATTLE;

Selling time – 10:45am approx.

A nice pair of bulls from Mark Butler sold at 186p/kg for a 535kg Limousin and 179p/kg for a 465kg Limousin.

A 625kg Limousin heifer from Colin Lymer sold to 177p/kg.

Top headage price of £1106.25 for Colin Lymer’s heifer and bulls to £995.10.

DAIRIES;

Selling time – 11:00am

A sunny day outside meant many had silage fever however the trade for dairies was still solid.

Topping the day at £1750 was Roger Godber of Morley, Derby for a smashing 34kg heifer. He also had a second to £1700.

Also at £1700 was a heifer from regular vendor Andrew Mills of Leics.

Next week will be a busy week in the dairy shed. There is already a good entry of milkers forward in the pedigree sale which also includes a special entry of over 40 youngstock from the Havendale herd of Tom & Sue Flower.

We also have a genuine small herd dispersal of 21 Friesian milkers on behalf of David Foster of Quarndon.

A good show of pigs and a blistering trade to go with it!

Pork pigs sold to the heights of 162p/kg for a 74kg pig from Bernard Minshull, Buxton with a pen of five 58kg pigs at 134p/kg for Stuart Massey, Marton.

Cutting pigs sold to 160p/kg for a trio of 80kg pigs from M J Godber, Belper, with others at 144p/kg, 142p/kg and 136p/kg from J & B Fentem, Alsop.

Bacon pigs topped at 150p/kg for a pair of 92kg pigs from M J Godber with a 88kg pig from PF & PD Parsons at 148p/kg and a pen of three 88kg pigs at 147p/kg and 90kg pigs at 146p/kg. from J & B Fentem.

A pair of 100kg pigs from Bernard Minshull at 146p/kg.

Heavy pigs topped at 138p/kg for a single 110kg pig from JA & EM Ratcliffe, Rodsley and 138p/kg for a 125kg pig from Stuart Massey, Marton.

Cull sows sold to 77p/kg for a 217kg sow from JW & B Bennett, Abbots Bromley and a 210kg sow at 66p/kg for B Harris, Congleton.

A Large White in-pig gilt from Stuart Massey sold at £172.

A very small entry met a very solid trade, the best seen so for this season with everyone keen to secure lambs, particularly handy weights.

Best on offer sold to 286p/kg from A Hulme of Leek, closely following by Ian and Andrew Wilson at 284p/kg.

Overall average come in at 255p/kg or £103/head.

A seasonal entry met an extremely solid trade from start to finish, regardless of weight.

Handy weights a solid trade also to top at 236p/kg and multiple pens at 230p and better.

A seasonal entry and a solid trade.

Best sold to £114/head from Nicola Beardsley at Mugginton and other strong Texel’s at £110/head from Chris Shenton.

Medium ewes look the dearest at £55 - £70.

Overall average £65/head.

STORE SHEEP (75);

A small entry but a brisk trade!!

A tremendous run of ewes from Nicola Beardsley and family were the highlight of the day topping at £210 twice for full mouth ewes with doubles. Others at £205 and £200. Singles from the same home at £180. Mules topped at £160 for full mouth with doubles. A small entry of hoggs with lambs sold at £125 - £140/family with singles at foot.

CALVES (91);

A silage day in the Staffordshire Moorlands and consequently a very quiet day in the calf shed but a packed ring of buyers ensure one of the best trades seen for a long while.

19 Continental Bulls av £250 (Up £26)

A solid trade for all with plenty of returning buyers looking for calves. No show stoppeds today but good Simmentals sold to £348 for F J Gould, Longnor.

10 Blues av £227 to £335 - Hallen Farming

7 Lims av £254 to £302 - J G Curtis & Son

32 Continental Heifers av £230.75 (Up £59)

One of the best trades experienced for heifers today with numerous buyers looking for calves. 11 better sorts over £270 with a high of £295 for T Stafford & Son who had another at £290. Mediums generally £230 - £260 with 8 smalls under £200.

Processing bulls very dear generally £45 - £70 today with a couple of good rearing sorts up to £108 for Wheelton Partners, Gawsworth.
