Leek Market Report for Tuesday 1st March 2016

A seasonal entry in all sections today at Leek. Just shy of 40 Dairy cattle sold on a solid trade and better than many had expected. Calves continue to be a very buoyant trade for the best up to £460 for bulls and £320 for heifers but the second quality would be more difficult to place.

In the finished sections, hoggs remain a similar trade with the best grossing over £100 a head to top at £107.50 or 220p/kg. The SQQ average of 187.24p/kg is very respectable. Cull sheep saw a solid demand to average nearly £65 a head.

Butchers cattle saw a better entry in terms of overall quality selling to 219p/kg and a top gross of £1358. Cull cows were a stronger trade with better black & white cows in the region of 100p/kg and over.

Five loads of produce saw a similar demand and 100% clearance.

A decent entry and a firmer trade this week. Top price of the day was 118p/kg for a 775kg British Blue cow from AE & HR Stubbs of Bramshall. Another British Blue cow from the same vendor at 655kg sold for 109p.kg. A non farm assured Charolais cow from Mrs Sheila Kidd of Quarnford at 945kg exchanged hands for 108p/kg.

Black & white cows from D Moseley of Astbury at 570kg sold for 104p/kg.

Top headage price of the day was £1020.60 for Mrs Kidd’s’ Charolais cow with an overall average for the barrens being 87.15p/kg. One overage steer was on offer being a 31 month old Limousin at 630kg realised 142p/kg.

CLEAN CATTLE (13);

A similar entry with plenty of buyers looking for quality clean cattle. Top price was 219p/kg for a 520kg Limousin heifer from Robert Belfield, with other Limousin heifers from Eric Mitchell at 570kg realised 199p/kg and another at 575kg also selling for 199p/kg.

Michael Critchlow of Tideswell achieved 198p/kg for a 550kg Limousin heifer at 550kg and David Elliott realised 196p/kg for a 600kg Limousin heifer with Robert Belfield achieving 186p/kg for a 535kg Limousin heifer.

A 565kg Limousin steer from Critchlow Brothers of Sheen sold well at 196p/kg with a 700kg Limousin steer from Eric Mitchell selling for 194p/kg.

A 585kg Blonde bull from AW Kennerley & son achieved 180p/kg.

Top headage price of the day was £1358 for a steer from Eric Mitchell with heifers up to £1176 from David Elliott and bulls to £1053 for AW Kennerley & Son.

DAIRIES (39);

A nice entry forward met a more buoyant trade with heifers peaking at £1860 and cows at £1780.

Top heifer at £1860 went to Messrs Furness & Taylor of Wormhill. Giving 34kg, she went to Messrs Fernyhough of Swythamley.

Close behind at £1800 was a 28kg heifer from Richard Lomas of Callow, she went to Messrs Curtis of Basford.

The top cow being a third calver from Peter Riley of Hartington reached £1780.

A smaller entry met a similar trade. Again all types were well bid for but less of the best to create the headline prices.

Best sorts raced away at 220p/kg with a nice number of hoggs exceeding 200p/kg. Leading the way was George Torr with his 41.2kg hoggs. Close behind was John & Gary Fryer at 218p for 42.5kg hoggs.

Top headage price of £107.50 for 50kg hoggs at £215. Plenty of others in the £95 - £105 bracket.

Many more could be handled on a weekly basis.

A modest entry saw a good trade overall to average £65 per head.

Best ewes to £95 from John Goldstraw and Rams at £98 from Maurice Gregory. Many more could have been sold to vendors advantage!

A similar number forward which is good as the stories continue about farms being shut down due to TB restrictions. Generally very similar with good calves looking well sold but some second quality sorts looking good value.

40 Continental Bulls av £285.87

Good calves are easy to sell with the top 14 over £330 with a high of £460 for a corking Blue bull (8 wks) from Woodward Partenrs, Rudyard. Mediums £260 - £310 look good value with smaller bulls either side of £200.

A similar story to the bulls with buyers looking for well reared, good shaped heifers. 13 best heifers today over £265 and a top pof £320 for a Blue from JS Harrison, Cheadle. Mediums £220 - £260 with younger sorts under £200.

Good bulls a real price with Angus to £285 for JD Pickford and Herefords to £282 for DW & P Hulme, Basfordwhile best Hereford heifers sold at £210 for P Massey & Son, Admaston. Medium bulls and heifers look good value if you are wanting to put a batch together.

Black & White Bulls

Only a few today with best Freisian bulls at £95 for P Massey & Son with good Hoslteins to £85. Small processing sorts £10 - £20 with better sorts £35 - £50.
