Leek Market Report for Tuesday 23rd February 2016

Generally a quieter day at Leek with 122 calves continuing to be a fast trade and selling up to £365 for a British Blue bull from JB Plant with heifers to £305.

Dairy cows were again a decent trade considering the underlying problem in the milk industry with a top price of £1690 for a Sheffield vendor.

Butchers hoggs continued to be a similar rates up to 220p/kg and £107.99 per head. Ewes were sharp in keeping with local trends up to £120.

Barren cows achieved up to 117p/kg for a Angus cow and a top headage price of £883.35. Clean cattle sold up to 194p/kg for a 520kg Limousin heifer.

A similar entry with again the leaner cows being the best trade of the day.

Top price was 117p/kg for a 755kg Angus cow from Tom Campbell of Tean with another Angus at 108p/kg for a 665kg beast and 106p/kg for a 700kg Angus again from Tom Campbell.

More cows needed each week to satisfy the demand from the good company of buyers in attendance.

CLEAN CATTLE;

More cattle required with plenty of buyers around the ring seeing a top price of 194p/kg for a 520kg Limousin heifer from Rob Belfield with the same vendor having a 515kg Limousin heifer which sold for 185p/kg.

Steers topped at 188p/kg for a 610kg Simmental beast from Critchlow Bros of Sheen and a 625kg Limousin steer from P Bray of Whiston exchanging hands for 186p/kg.

A 580kg Simmental bull from AW Kennerley & Son achieved 159p/kg.

Top headage price was £1162.50 for a 625kg Limousin steer from P Bray of Whiston with Critchlow bros steer grossing £1146.80.

Plenty of buyers in attendance on Tuesday but a very mixed quality forward.

Taking top honours was Howard Lea of Wortley, Sheffield with a 30kg second calver. She went to Bob & Andrew Moss of Onneley. A third calver from the same home reached £1570.

Heifers peaked at £1680 from John Allen of Tutbury, giving 39kg she went to Messrs Brassington.

A special entry of in-calf heifers from Messrs Heathcote of Grange Mill peaked at £1020 and averaged £982.

A reasonable entry sold on a firm trade improved on the previous week. Standard weight hoggs in and around 200p regularly.

A top price of 220p twice, once from John & Gary Fryer and again from Frank Heath. Plenty of other good meated sorts exceeding 210p. Top eight pens average 216p/kg.

Big hogs sold on a very firm trade to a top of £108 per head. Numerous pens £100 - £105 per head.

A similar entry met a firm trade. Top prices of £120 from Paul Kirkham & Isabel Bourne. Other good Texels exceeding £100.

Mules looking well sold at £70-£75 for the best.

Suffolk ewes sold to £95 and £90 for meated sorts.

Trade today would be slightly less, very much in line with reports from other places. That said, there were plenty of bidders for all types to ensure a competitive trade throughout.

Although the average was up £10, the best continental bulls would be about £20 per head back in general.

29 Continental Heifers av £237.62

A similar entry saw an average very similar to last week. The better end would be slightly back on the week but non the less a third of the entry were £280 and over. Robert & Andy Williamson led the way at £305 for a Blue.

13 Blues av £245 to £305 - RG & AS Williamson

14 Sims av £228 to £300 – WJ & MJ Holdcroft

2 Lims av £259 to £268 – J & W Knight

20 Native Hereford & Angus

Hereford bulls topped at £280 from David Stanley of Yarlet and Angus bulls topped at £270 from JE Milner, Dilhorne. Native bulls average £205 including small sorts at £62.

Hefiers topped at £188 from David Stanley with his Herefords.

Black & White Bulls

Trade was back on last week with only the best exceeding £100. The vast majority were processing calves which were £30 -£45 for better end and £15 - £25 for New Zealand types.
