Leek Market Report for Tuesday 28th June 2016

A good show of stock today with barren cows being

well sold up to 160p/kg for a 825kg Limousin and

130p/kg for a Simmental to top £1320 per head.

Another good show of calves up to £430 for a good

shaped Limousin bull from Rob Hall with bull calves

averaging £226 and heifers £223.

More butchers lambs and a good trade up to 225p/kg

from Oliver Moss of Abbotts Bromley with top

headage price of £100.05. Ewes sold up to £101 to

average £73.06.

Dairies were a similar trade selling up to £1530 for a

newly calved heifer from Roxholme Estates and

newly calved cows up to £1400 from the same vendor.

A decent entry and trade very similar selling to a top

price of 160p/kg for a 825kg Limousin from Les Elkin

with 845kg Simmental from Joe & Rachel Ede of

Checkley at 130p/kg.

Dairy shorthorns sold up to 116p/kg for a 645kg beast

from W Waters of Upper Hulme with Black & Whites

up to 115p/kg for a 740kg beast from WG & J Clark of

Bradnop with a 755kg Black & White selling at 115p/kg

for B N Capewell.

There was plenty other cows over 100p/kg with an

overall average of 95.44p/kg.

Top headage price was £1320 for the Limousin with

Simmentals to £1098.50 and Black & Whites to £974.70

and £872.40.

Plenty of trade for those on offer with a top price of

199p/kg for a Limousin heifer weighing 500kg from

David Elliott.

184p/kg was paid for a 530kg Angus steer from I G

Foster of Derby with a 635kg Angus steer from the same

vendor selling for 184p/kg also. A commercial Angus

steer at 660kg exchanged hands for 170p/kg.

Bulls sold up to 143p/kg for a 690kg Holstein from

Howard Kennerley of Betley.

Top headage price was £1168.40 for 635kg Angus steer

with others up to £1122 and heifers topping at £1094.50

and bulls to £986.70.

Herd Dispersal cows to £1530 av £1342

Overall 48 Milkers to average £1219

Another great turnout of both vendors and purchasers

resulted in a continued sold trade which saw the entire

entry average £1219 and the herd dispersal consignment

from Roxholme Estates, Lincolnshire average £1342.

Although not reaching the heady top prices of last week,

the trade for the quality on offer was strong with 11

animals passing the £1400 mark.

The top price came within the first herd consignments

from Roxholme Estates whose Swedish cross breds

drew a strong following and trade. Peaking at £1530 was

an April calved heifer giving 29kg to Messrs Holloway

of Bomere Heath, Shrewsbury. Others up to 80 days

calved to £1430 and £1400 (three times) respectively.

In-calf heifers from the same home sold to £1300.

All breeds were in demand which saw a lovely Ayrshire

from Brian Coutts of Knutsford to £1430, a Shorthorn

heifer from Messrs Bennett of Whiston to £1410 and

British Friesians from Peter Southwell of Great

Haywood to £1400.

More milkers to come from Roxholme Estates in a

fortnight together with a fantastic herd dispersal from

Don Bailey of Sutton-on-the-Hill (more details to

Charity lamb sold by Richard Moss on behalf of

Birmingham Children’s Hospital, purchased by Mr

Steven Hill of M Najib & Son of Foston at 300p/kg to

gross £117.

Away from the charity land, an improved entry saw a

strong enquiry. Best lambs sold in the 205p – 216p

bracket generally to top 225p.

Second quality looked best sold on the day with very

little below 180p to provide an overall average of 191p/

Big lambs again very well sold at Leek to gross over

£100 per head.

More lambs now required week on week. Thank you for

Hoggs sold to another strong trade with plenty of

demand for the right goods to a top of 158p to average

137p to include everything including two-toothers.


A reasonable entry for time of year sold on a solid trade

to a top of £101 for Robert & Andy Williamson.

An excellent show of 156 calves on offer sold to a

packed ring of buyers with quality continental rearing

calves all selling to over £400 per head.

The top price was £430 for a Limousin cross bull from

Rob Hall of Buxton with a Simmental bull form J W

Bennison close behind at £428 and British Blues from J

B Plant to £410.

The quality of calves was very good throughout with the

109 bull calves averaging £226 per head throughout

which included 28 dairy bulls.

The 47 heifer calves on offer saw the Blues topping at

£350 from B H Wainwright of Meerbrook with F & R

Brassington realising £335 for Simmentals and G T

Worsley of Chapel-en-le-Frith topping at £305 for

Limousins. The overall heifer average was £223.40.
