Leek Market Report for Tuesday 28th November 2017

Another good days trading at Leek Market this Tuesday with a good show of Barren & Clean cattle with trade staying firm again this week. Barrens topped at 127p/kg for a 755kg Shorthorn with clean cattle being short of quality but topped at 200p/kg for a 520kg Blue heifer from the Kennerley family.

A good number of pigs forward with a strong trade topping at 154p/kg for 85kg pigs from J & B Fentem with weaners to £40/head.

Numbers up in the calf shed this week but trade back on the week. Top call was £375 & £368 for Blue bull calves from Hallen Farming, with a strong 3 mth Blue heifer calf at £430 from F & EM Buxton, Barlaston.

A good entry of lambs forward today with new vendors forward. Lambs topped 205p/kg for Texel’s from K House of Congleton with a large proportion of commercial types forward, the overall average was 167.76p/kg.

A lovely entry of milkers today in the Dairy section with heifers to £1800 for Andrew Weston of Litton and the herd dispersal on behalf of the Fletcher Family drawing in a large crowd and topping at £1510.

A reduced entry but still a respectable number and a full compliment of buyers.

Top price of the day was 127p/kg for a 755kg Shorthorn cow from Y Sigley of Meerbrook. A MRI cow from J W Handford of Apenshaw at 695kg achieved 126p/kg with a Hereford at 755kg from Roy Sant sold well at 123p/kg.

There were several other cows over 110p/kg.

Top headage price of the day was £960 for a Blue cow from AE & HR Stubbs with Shorthorns to £958.85.

Overall averages of 94.55p/kg or £612.11/head.

There were four bulls on offer selling to 116p/kg for a 655kg Holstein from D Moseley of Astbury with a 965kg Angus at 110p/kg and a 1000kg Limousin bull to 104p/kg. Top headage price was £1061.50.

An increased entry but a shortage of quality cattle with the majority in need of further feeding.

Top price was 200p/kg paid for a 520kg British Blue heifer for AW & D Kennerley & Son of Betley with two Limousin heifer from JH & MR Rushton of Kingstone weighing 515kg & 510kg achieved 182p/kg & 180p/kg.

A 590kg Hereford steer from J W Brandrick of Beamhurst sold for 170p/kg with a 680jg Hereford from the same vendor at 162p/kg.

A 765kg Limousin bull from Rushton Spencer was well sold at 179p/kg.

Top headage price was £1369.35 for the Limousin bull with Hereford steers to £1101.60 and heifers to £1040.

DAIRIES (168);

A healthy entry of commercial milkers saw a top price of £1800 for a 31kg heifer from Andrew Weston of Litton. Close behind at £1770 was another heifer, this time from Roger & Diane Steeples of Kettering, Northants. They also had a second heifer at £1750.

Cows peaked at £1600 for a fourth calver from Rob parker of Ticknall giving 50kg.

A good crowd gathered for the Fletcher herd dispersal which topped at £1510 for a September calved heifer.

Young calves topped at £300 for Messrs Lawley, Bagnall.

Entries invited for the Pedigree show & sale on 19th December. John Bayley has kindly agreed to act at judge for the event.

Am increased entry with plenty of trade with a good number of whole sale & retail butchers looking for quality pigs.

Top price was 132p/kg for Pork pigs from S A Hulme of Leek with cutters from AW & RA Mycock of Flagg selling up to 140p/kg and a pen from H Kelsall & Son of Wilmslow achieved 136p/kg for 82kg.

Bacon pigs were the best trade of the day up to 154p/kg for a pen of 85kg pigs from J & B Fentem & Son with other pigs from the same vendor at 141p/kg, 136p/kg (twice).

Heavier pigs sold to 144p/kg for a pen from Chris Hine of Biddulph at 120p/kg with a pen of 106kg pigs from J & B Fentem at 128p/kg.

There were 5 cull sows of offer selling to 50p/kg for J & B Fentem (twice) at 229kg & 249kg with a 285kg sow at 49p/kg for R P Thompson of Hinstock.

Top headage price was £111.52 for cutters with baconer’s to £132.97 for J & B Fentem and heavy pigs to £173.52 for Chris Hine, with cull sows topping at £139.65.

There were six pens of store pigs on offer selling to £40 for a pen from S Kidd Farmers of Longnor with others to £36 for J Ball of Sandbach.

A fair entry sold on a solid trade from start to finish with new orders operating. Best sorts selling to 205p/kg and better types generally 185p+ depending on weight.

Plenty of commercial types in the entry seeing the average pulled back to 168p/kg.

Nice to see more about with trade very strong. Best Texel’s to £100 per head from K House of Congleton with others at £97 from Richard Moss of Abbotts Bromley.

Middle sorts best sold on the day, with welsh ewes selling at £40 a head. Overall average of £58.63.

More calves on offer again but generally less trade with less orders around the ring.

66 Continental Bulls av £244.50

Generally less money but bidders for all. 18 best calves topped £300 with a couple of best Blues from Dale Allen of Hallen Farming at £375 and £368. Mediums £200 - £300 with smaller or younger sorts under £200.

Again less but quality was less also. 12 best heifers topped £250 with a strong 3 mth old sold at £430 with fresh calves to £305 for Austin Fernihough, Kidsgrove. Medium heifers £200 - £240 with younger calves under £200.
