Leek Market Store Report for Saturday 17th March 2018

A highly successful sale 649 store and breeding cattle were on offer, with buyers continuing to attend from a wide area ensuring a firm trade for all types of cattle, with some smaller sorts looking particularly well sold.

Breeding Section

In the breeding section, top price paid was £1,520 for a Limousin cow with a Limousin heifer calf at foot from F & J Barlow of Froghall, with an Aberdeen Angus cow, with an Aberdeen Angus steer calf at foot from Jacksons Farms of Monyash up to £1,300 and a Bazadaise heifer with a Bazadaise steer calf at foot from Mrs P Mitchell of Harriseahead at £1,140.

An entry from Chris Gabbott of Rainow also sold up to £1,140 for a Simmental heifer with a Charolais bull calf at foot, with another outfit at £1,020 for a Hereford cow with a young Charolais bull calf at foot.

An entry of Shorthorn and Hereford maiden heifers from J & R Potts of Over Alderley sold up to £980 for a pair of Shorthorns being 17 months old, with a further similar pair at £900 and a pair of 18 month old heifers at £890.

Young Bulls

These topped at £1,100 for a 22 month old Aberdeen Angus from Needham Brothers of Bradnop, with a 14 month old Limousin bull from I & R Smith of Ilam at £1,010 and a pair of Limousins from the same vendor at 11 months old exchanging hands at £900.

A British Blue bull from W E Turnock & Sons of Onecote being 17 months old exchanged hands for £900 with another British Blue bull from the same vendor selling for £900. A pair of good shaped 9 - 10 month old British Blue bulls from F & J Barlow of Froghall were well sold at £840.

Simmental bulls being 13 months old from Robinson Partners of Rudyard sold up to £830 with a Fleckveih 16 month old bull from K Thornley of Stanton at £750.

There were a number of smaller sorts on offer with the overall average for young bulls being £675.38.

Steers

There were 315 steers on offer, with a top price of £1,295 which was paid for a 24 month old Simmental from Wilshaw & Hine of Swythamley, with another pair of 23 month old Simmentals at £1,220 and another single 24 month old Simmental also from Wilshaw and Hine, exchanging hands at £1,110.

A 25 month old Charolais from Wilshaw & Hine sold for £1,270, with another 25 month old Charolais from the same vendor at £1,060.

Limousin steers being 24 months old from J W & D M Roe of Morrilow Heath were well sold up to £1,225, with a single 27 month old Limousin from J C Robinson of Rushton at £1,180. Another single Limousin being 20 months old from J Austin of Parwich was well sold at £1,1030.

British Blue steers sold up to £1,145 for a single 21 month old from S & C O’Rourke of Marton, with a 21 month old British Blue steer from J Austin of Parwich at £1,130 and a single 21 month old British Blue steer being well sold from J E Chamberlain & Son of Marston Montgomery at £1,105.

Older Hereford steers from S Edge of Wetley Rocks being 33 months old sold up to £1,100, with a single 20 month old Aberdeen Angus from K & A Gould of Thorncliffe selling for £1,085.

A Shorthorn steer from D Watkins of Ipstones sold up to £1,180 for a 22 month old animal, with Welsh Black steers at 23 months up to £1,000 from the same vendor.

Younger sorts topped at £1,040 for a pair of 11 month old Limousins from K Grocott of Leigh, with six 13 month old Limousin steers from A & T Carr of Waterfall at £995 and a single 12 month old Limousin from R Flower of Alstonefield at £930.

Charolais steers from W S & R M Woodroffe of Draycott were well sold up to £890.

Overall average achieved for steers was a pleasing £807.67.

Heifers

There were 271 on offer, with top price of the day being £1,100 which was paid for a pair of British Blue heifers from S Edge of Wetley Rocks, with a single 26 month old British Blue from J C Robinson of Rushton at £1,090 and a group of three British Blues being 21 months old from S & C O’Rourke of Marton at £1,060.

Holstein heifers being 28 months old from R J Smith of Pipe Ridware sold up to £1,070 with another pair of 41 month old Holsteins from the same vendor at £1,025.

Hereford heifers being 35 months old from S Edge sold for £1,000 with a pair of 23 month old Charolais from R & M Hunter & Sons of Quarnford at £990 and a single 33 month old British Blue from S Edge at £975.

A group of three 29 month old Hereford heifers from Norton Hall Farms of Stone were well sold at £955, with a group of three Simmental heifers being 21 months old at £925.

British Blue heifers being 10 months old from F & J Barlow of Ipstones were well sold up to £890, with other younger sorts up to £820 for a 9 month old British Blue from the same vendor and 10 month old Limousin heifers from W S & R M Woodroffe of Draycott at £810.

Limousin heifers from K Grocott of Leigh being 10 months old sold up to £780.

Overall average achieved for heifers was £694.17.
