Store Cattle Sale Report
A very pleasing entry of 526 store and breeding cattle were on offer for the mid November sale with the usual good attendance of buyers from a wide area looking for all types of cattle.
There was an increased interest this sale for in calf cows and heifers, with a shortage of quality cows with calves at foot. A top price of £1255 was paid for a Black and White cow with a Blonde D’Aquataine heifer calf at foot from P I R Sales of Leekfrith, with other outfits up to £980 for a Shorthorn cow with a Simmental bull calf at foot from C H Day & Sons of Blackshaw Moor, with a second similar outfit with a heifer calf at foot at £900.
Particularly well sold was a pedigree Belted Galloway aged cow with a Belted Galloway bull calf at foot from Mr Roland of Acton Bridge, which exchanged hands for £850.
In calf cows and heifers sold up to £1035 from Mr F W Kirkham of King Sterndale for a British Blue Heifer being 46 months old, having run with the Limousin bull, with other heifers from the same vendor up to £990 and £980.
Aged suckler cows from S Henshaw of Fairfield sold up to £630 for an Aberdeen Angus and £580 for a Blonde D’Aquatiane, both of which had been running with the bull.
There was a good enquiry for breeding bulls, with a pure bred Limousin bull from Mr Goldstraw of Winkhill being particularly well sold at £1360.
A pedigree Charolais bull from G Grindey of Onecote exchanged hands at £1340 and a young pedigree Simmental bull being 15 months old from Messrs Driver of Chisworth sold for £1270.
A Charolais bull from R Watson of Bradnop being 15 months old sold for £825, with a six month old British Blue bull from F & J Barlow of Froghall, exchanging hands for £755. Limousins at 7 months old from F W Kirkham of King Sterndale exchanged hands up to £610.
Overall average for young bulls was £560.
There were 273 steers on offer, with trade for the stronger cattle being very firm seeing competitive bidding from a number of buyers. Top price of the day was £1195 which was paid for a 31 month old Charolais from Homes Bros of Heanor, with the same price also being achieved for a British Blue Steer from J Bowcock of Longsdon.
An 18 month old South Devon from M Ollerenshaw of Bradwell sold up to £1185, with a group of three Limousins from the same vendor at 21 months old at £1170 and a single 22 month old Limousin from Hambleton Bros of Calton at £1150.
Simmental steers from M Ollerenshaw being 20 months old sold up to £1140, with a 24 month old Limousin from J Bowcock at £1115 and a 21 month old Limousin from J Austin of Parwich at £1100.
A British Blue steer also from J Austin for £1100, with a 25 month old British Blue from J Blackwell & Sons of Doveholes exchanged hands for £1095.
Hereford steers from M Rowlinson of Ramshorn being 25 months old sold up to £1095, with a pair of 17 month old Limousins from G T Rowlinson of Denstone at £1085. A 23 month old Simmental from J Bowcock exchanged hands for £1070 and £1020 was paid for a 22 month old Simmental from J & C Hudson of Wetton.
A pair of Aberdeen Angus steers from R J Litchfield & Sons of Newborough being 21 months old sold up to £975, with other Aberdeen Angus up to £940 from Birchwood Park Farm of Roston being 23 months old and £930 for a pair of 19 month old Aberdeen Angus from Mr Rydzyk of Long Eaton.
South Devon steers from I Lomax of Saverley Green topped at £930 for a group of three being 17 months old, with a single 26 month Montbeliarde from Birchwood Park Farms at £905 and Shorthorns up to £895 for a further group of three Montbeliarde from Homes Bros.
Younger sorts topped at £850 for a group of three 11 month old Limousins from J Austin of Parwich, with an 11 month old Limousin from G Derbyshire of Warslow at £820 and a pair of 8 month old Limousins from the same vendor at £810.
8 month old Simmentals from J & C Hudson of Wetton sold up to £710, with 6 month old Bazadaises from Messrs Driver of Chisworth at £690.
Overall average achieved for steers was £738.33.
There were 180 heifers on offer, with quality cattle selling up to £1135 for a pair of 19 month old Limousins from G T Rowlinson of Denstone, with the same vendor receiving £1065 for a 20 month old and an 18 month old Limousin.
A 34 month old Limousin from Homes Bros of Heanor sold up to £1055, with a pair of British Blue heifers from Critchlow Bros of Sheen at 22 months old exchanging hands for £990 and a group of three Aberdeen Angus being 23 months old from Birchwood Park Farms sold for £980.
A 17 month old Limousin from Mrs Salt of Rue Hill sold for £930, with a 28 month old Charolais from G Grindey of Onecote at £850 and Herefords up to £830 from J Shemilt of Ipstones being 25 months old.
Younger sorts sold up to £780 for a group of 8 month old Limousins from G Derbyshire of Warslow, with a Blonde D’Aquataine heifer from C H Ede & Sons of Somersal Herbert being 8 months old selling for £625 and Bazadaise heifers being 6 months old from Messrs Driver up to £615.
Overall average achieved for heifers was £620.98.
