An entry of 420 store and breeding cattle were on offer for the fortnightly sale which saw a good solid trade throughout for all types of cattle.
There was a shortage of breeding cows with calves at foot, with a mixed quality forward for sale, which saw a South Devon pedigree cow with two South Devon calves at foot from D Barlow of Warslow being well sold for £1520, with another pedigree South Devon cow with a South Devon bull calf from the same vendor at £960.
A Limousin cow being in calf from Mr McConnell of Bagnall sold for £1000, with a Hereford cow with a Hereford heifer calf at foot from the same vendor exchanging hands for £940.
These were also in short supply, seeing a pair of Simmentals from G Bailey of Rushton being 7 – 8 months old selling for £570, with an 11 month old Limousin bull from J M Cotterill & Sons of Bamford also at £570 and Shorthorn bulls being 8 months old from the same vendor up to £515.
There were a number of smaller bulls on offer, which saw an overall average of £394.06.
There were 234 steers on offer with trade being very similar to two weeks ago, although some of the smaller sorts saw an improved trade. Top price of the day was £1190 which was paid for a 22 month old Charolais from G Mellor of Macclesfield, with 15 month old Charolais’ up to £980 from S & S Brain of Cresswell.
British Blue steers from S Edge of Wetley Rocks topped at £1165, with a further 22 month old British Blue from the same vendor at £1090 and a pair of 24 month old British Blues from R & M Green & Sons of Whiston at £995.
Limousin steers being 24 months old from G Mellor topped at £1140, with another pair from J G Curtis & Son of Basford being 23 months old exchanging hands for £1125 and a single from J Hudson of Ipstones being 30 months old at £1100. A further group of three from J G Curtis & Son sold for £1090.
A pair of Hereford steers being 27 months old from J J Blackwell & Sons of Buxton sold for £1130, with a single from Marston Park Farm being 25 months old exchanging hands for £1095 and a single from W P Smith of Mablethorpe being 20 months old at £990.
There was a shortage of strong Aberdeen Angus, with top price being £1080 which was paid for a pair from A Chaddock of Gillow Heath.
Younger sorts sold up to £895 for a 7 month old Simmental from J Badham of Abbots Bromley, with a good quality 7 month old Limousin from J J Watson of Stockport being well sold at £840 and a 6 month old Limousin from the same vendor at £760. A Hayes of Alstonefield realised up to £720 for a 7 month old Limousin, with 9 month old British Blue steers from A Etches of Longnor at £710.
Overall average achieved for steers was £734.70.
There were 148 heifers on offer, with a top price of £960 which was paid for a 17 month old Limousin from Messrs Snell of Mablethorpe, with an 18 month old Limousin from J Hudson of Ipstones at £955 with a second from Mrs Hudson also at £955 being 19 months old.
A pair of 21 month Simmentals from S Edge of Wetley Rocks exchanged hands for £880, with an 18 month old Charolais from S Redfern of Foxt at £875 and a group of three 14 month old Charolais’ from Atkin Farms of Field at £795.
Hereford heifers from A J & L E Bailey of Grindon being 18 months old sold up to £790, with a group of three British Blue heifers from Atkin Farms being 15 months old exchanging hands for £775.
A group of British Blue heifers being 16 months old from R E Staples & Sons of Loughborough were particularly well sold for £770.
Younger sorts topped at £685 for a group of 7 month old Limousin’s from J J Watson of Stockport with a group of four 14 month old Aberdeen Angus from R & H Bates & Sons of Marton selling for £665 and a 6 month old Limousin from A Hayes of Alstonefield at £640.
Overall average achieved for heifers was £626.56.
