A reduced entry of 286 store and breeding cattle were on offer, as expected for the time of year, but there was a decent show of suckler cows with calves at foot, with buyers continuing to look for stock of all types and ages.

Breeding Section

Top price for cows with calves at foot was £1380, which was paid for a Blonde D’aquitaine cow with a Blonde D’aquitaine steer calf at foot from Mrs Cheetham of Buglawton, with the same vendor having a Simmental cow with a Blonde D’aquitaine steer calf at foot for £1220.

A pedigree Simmental cow with a pedigree Simmental heifer calf at foot from P & M A Lovatt of Gillow Heath was well sold at £1370, with an entry from A W Kennerley & Son of Betley selling up to £1210 for a Limousin heifer with a young calf at foot, with other similar outfits from the same vendor at £1150 and £1140.

An entry from D Cope of Endon sold up to £1180 for an Aberdeen Angus cow, with a Hereford bull calf at foot, with others from the same vendor at £1150 and £1090 (twice).

In calf cows from G Stubbs of Wetton sold up to £900 for a British Blue in calf to the Simmental.

Young Bulls

There was a shortage of young bulls, with the top price being £730 which was paid for a 28 month old Hereford from Mr Hemphill of Draycott in the Clay, with a pair of British Blue bulls being 12 months old from C Armstrong of Church Lawton at £665 and a further pair from the same vendor at £610.

A pair of 13 month old Limousins also from C Armstrong sold for £620.

There was a high proportion of younger sorts on offer which reduced the average to £340.65.

Steers

There were 104 steers on offer, with stronger cattle being in short supply. Top price for the steers was £1145 which was paid for a pair of 24 month old Herefords from J Jervis of Cheadle, with other Herefords from the same vendor being 25 months old up to £1010.

A group of three British Blue steers from M Jervis of Whiston sold up to £1120, with other British Blues up to £1045 for a 26 month animal from the same vendor and a group of four being 21 months old from B J & B W Brunt & Sons of Wincle exchanging hands for £1020.

A single Aberdeen Angus being 18 months old was well sold from M G & C Davenport of Leekbrook at £1105, with a group of three 20 month old Aberdeen Angus from B J & B W Brunt & Sons at £1060 and a further group of 19 month old Aberdeen Angus from new vendor, J R Bloor of Barnshaw, Crewe at £1025.

A pair of 21 month old Aberdeen Angus also from new vendor D H Jones & Sons of Holmes Chapel sold for £985.

Limousins being 25 months old sold up to £1090 for a group of three from J Jervis, with another group of three at 22 months from D Armstrong of Kidsgrove at £985.

Simmental steers being 14 months old from C Bowers & Sons of Bradley sold up to £1070, with a 14 month old Charolais from the same vendor at £1025 and a pair of 13 months old Charolais’ from the same vendor at £1020.

Simmental steers at 25 months old from J Jervis topped at £1050.

Friesian steers topped at £705 for a 21 month old animal from A Hemphill of Draycott in the Clay.

Younger sorts sold up to £625 for a group of 8 month old British Blue’s from Foker Grange Farms Ltd of Leek, with others from the same vendor being 7 months old at £610 and £605.

Overall average for steers was £726.20.

Heifers

There were 112 heifers on offer, with a top price of £955, which was paid to new vendor G Oates of Wilmslow for a pair of 24 month old Herefords, with other Herefords from the same vendor selling to £915 for a group of three also being 24 months old and a single similar heifer at £895.

Limousin heifers from J Bebbington of Rushton sold up to £940 for a 21 month old heifer, with 22 month old Limousins from D Armstrong of Kidsgrove at £860.

A group of three 26 month old British Blues from J Jervis of Cheadle sold for £935, with Aberdeen Angus up to £910 for a pair of 20 month old heifers from B J & B W Brunt & Sons of Wincle.

Simmental heifers sold up to £895 for a pair of 27 month old heifers from D Burton of Rough Close.

Younger sorts sold up to £615 for a group of seven 8 month old British Blue heifers from Foker Grange Farms Ltd of Leek, with others of a similar age from the same vendor at £600 and £580.

Overall average achieved for heifers was £605.27.
