Leek Store Report for Saturday 14th April 2018

A total entry of 635 store and breeding cattle were on offer, with trade very similar to two weeks ago, although some of the smaller sorts were slightly steadier, with potential purchasers being concerned about the shortage of fodder.

Breeding Section

Top price in the breeding section was £1640, which was paid for a Limousin cow with a Limousin heifer calf at foot from D Bullock of Meerbrook, with a second Limousin cow from the same vendor with a Limousin steer calf achieving £1500.

A British Blue cow with a British Blue bull calf at foot from Madders & Johnson of Stafford was well sold at £1610.

An entry from G W Wain & Sons of Brassington sold up to £1380 for a British Blue cow with a Limousin bull calf at foot, they also sold a Limousin cow with Hereford calf at foot for £1300 and other similar outfits at £1230 and £1220.

In calf Limousin cows from D Bullock of Meerbrook sold up to £1090, with other at £1080 and £1030, having run with the Limousin bull for approximately 3 months.

A Limousin cow PD’d in calf to the British Blue from A Sayer of Hilderstone sold up to £1400, with another similar outfit from the same vendor at £1270.

Young Bulls

Young bulls sold up to £1140 for a 12 month old Limousin from A Sayer of Hilderstone, with a 14 month old ¾ bred Shorthorn from A Trueman of Quarnford at £910 and a 9 month old British Blue from J D Pickford & Sons of Leek at £750. An entry from R Simcock of Rainow topped at £720 for a 9 month old Limousin.

There was high proportion of smaller bulls on offer, which reduced the overall average to £380.50.

Steers

There were 282 steers on offer, with the top price of the day being £1355, which was paid for a 23 month old Hereford from A & N Swinson of Gawsworth, with another Hereford also being 23 months old from the same vendor selling for £1195. A 22 month old Hereford from L A & M A Done & Sons of Bosley achieved £1160 and a group of three 23 month old  Hereford steers from K Tomlinson of Abbots Bromley topped at £1105.

A 23 month old Limousin steer from B Higginson of Swythamley exchanged hands for £1270, with a further 23 month old Limousin from J Gilman & Partners of Bosley at £1135 and a pair of 11 month old Limousins from A Leason of Ilam being particularly well sold at £1090.

Aberdeen Angus steers from R Robinson & Sons of Upper Hulme being 24 months old sold up to £1240 for a group of three, with a group of four Aberdeen Angus being 22 months from K Tomlinson of Abbots Bromley at £1150 and a pair of 20 month old Aberdeen Angus from G C Brandrick & Son of Newborough at £1070.

British Blue steers from K Sessions of Alkmonton being 25 months old topped at £1145, with a group of five British Blues being 25 months old from K Tomlinson at £1055.

Blonde D’Aquataine steers from R Robinson & Sons being 23 months old sold up to £1095 with a 24 month old Simmental from L A & M A Done & Sons exchanging hands for £1060.

A 29 month old Friesian from J Brough & Son of Rudyard sold for £895.

Other younger sorts sold up to £1040 for a pair of 12 month old Limousins from K Tomlinson and a single 13 month old Charolais from P Millward of Congleton exchanged hand for £1000.

Overall average for steers was £752.81.

Heifers

There was also 282 heifers on offer, with a top price of £1195, which was paid for a 23 month old Simmental from A & N Swinson of Gawsworth, with South Devons up to 24 months old exchanging hands for £1175 from the same vendor. A pair of Limousins from J Gilman & Partners of Bosley being 24 months old sold at £1140 and a further group of three being 22 months old from the same vendor exchanging hands for £1110.

A group of four 23 month old British Blues from K Sessions of Alkmonton sold up to £1060, with a group of five from Foker Grange Farms Ltd of Leek being 17 months old selling for £1,045.

A single 24 month old Aberdeen Angus from R Robinson & Sons of Upper Hulme was well sold at £1030, with a group of four Blonde D’Aquataine heifers being 22 months old from R Edwards of Freehay at £990.

A group of three, 21 month old Herefords from A Sutton of Ipstones achieved up to £990.

Younger sorts sold up to £905 for an 11 month old Limousin from K Tomlinson of Abbots Bromley, with a group of four 12 month old Limousins from A Leason of Ilam at £900.

Overall average achieved for heifers was £687.15.
