Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 15th December

Unexpectedly busy for the penultimate market before Christmas with no fewer than 632 cattle and 1,592 sheep on offer from 227 vendors.

For the avoidance of doubt, we are open next Monday 22nd December and also on the 29th December.

The store & breeding cattle section was very well supported with a total of 375 head on off and trade was strong from the first to last.

Steers reached 2,240 to average £1.477 with heifers to £2,260 ave £1,331.  Feeding bulls peaked at £1,800 ave £1,021.

The averages were lower this week, but only because there are more smaller/younger cattle in the sample.

There were 31 breeding cattle forward with cows and calves to £1,860 and a mature Limousin stock bull to £2,500.

A smaller entry of 95 finished cattle sold on a trade very similar to last week.

Top figures 448p/kg and £3,216 per head.

The average for the 32 heifers was 379.2 pence and £2,318 per head.

Another large entry of 129 OTM cattle saw trade noticeably down.  Top figures 326p/kg and £2,566 per head.

The average was a solid 225.8 pence with the per head figure at £1,396.

Only 33 calves on offer on a rotten wet day with bulls to £570 and heifers also to £570.

Decent numbers of sheep on offer with 1,071 lambs forward, trade was excellent with the trouble in France having no effect on business in Bakewell.

Top figures 389p/kg and £188.67 per head.

The SQQ was a hefty 346.0 pence making a typical lamb in the 39-45 kg weight range worth £149.33

521 Ewes and Rams

(Auctioneers Mark Elliott & Holly Swift)

A large show for the mid December week with vendors very well rewarded and trade strong in all categories.

Generally, there were not as many top end and continentals when compared to last week, but those that were entered sold very well.  Some strong heavy well fleshed Mules a very good trade.

Top price today £267 for long Texels from the Hadfields at Chamber Farm.  The best 10 pens averaged a very pleasing £239.70.

In the crossbreds, good strong ewes £170 and above with plenty £185 plus.  Mules to £190 with a run of sheep from the South well fed and presented having a storming trade.

Horned ewes past £106 for the best but they needed to have good flesh.

Still men out for feeding ewes with these faring well.

In the rams a very diverse entry totalling 29 head topped at £238 for a Texel from the Burton family.  Other continental tups to £230 and £216.

492 ewes 100% clearance ave £135.10

29 rams 100% clearance ave £167.28
