Bakewell Market Report Monday 12th January
Full steam ahead with stock numbers looking good for the second market of the New Year. 685 cattle and 1,164 sheep sold on a solid trade throughout with OTM cattle prices well up and the demand for the store cattle at record levels.
There were 314 store & breeding cattle on offer selling to a full line up of buyers at prices that seem to have taken yet another lift.
Steers sold to £2,520 and averaged an astonishing £1,784. Heifers hit £2,600 to average a remarkable £1,578 and the 25 feeding bulls reached £2,420 to average £1,080.

There was an excellent turnout of 168 finished cattle with a good solid demand.
Top figures 468p/kg and £3,882 per head.
The average for the 78 heifers looked good at 386.9p and £2,374 per head.
It is not surprising that OTM cattle numbers are up with concerns about the milk price and fodder stocks, but what is a surprise is that the trade is so good.
Top figures for the 147 animals on sale were 388p/kg and £3,220 per head.
The average was a healthy 253.9 pence and a level £1,700 per head.
Calves were a little more plentiful with 56 forward. Trade was good with bulls to £855 and heifers £660.
Over in the sheep section there was a total of 1,164 head on offer.
The 886 hoggs looked well sold on the day with lighter weights attracting the most interest. Top figures 362p/kg and £183.78.
The SQQ average emerged at 336.9 pence making a typical lamb in the 39-45 kg bracket worth £145.03.
In the cull sheep department, the entry of 278 sold well with ewes to £225 to average £140.53 for a sample that included a number of hill breeds.

A maximum number of 147 barrens and OTM’s today and an explosion in the trade with the average up 11 pence on the week with a couple of extra bidders at ringside making their presence felt. 20 over 300 pence today with a high price of 388p (£3220) for a superb Limmy heifer (33 mnths) for Steven & Steff Wells, Monyash with the best cow at 358p (£3071) for a super Limmy (6 yrs) for Mark Hodgkinson, Earl Sterndale. Plenty of good cows 290-330p.

Good numbers and plenty of demand with some special bulls about today. 12 best over 407p and 10 over £3000, with a run of pure Blonds from Mark Shenton at 450p (£3312), 430p (£3732), and 413p (£3882). Steven Wells had 441p (£3228).

A much healthier entry of 314 forward met an exceptional trade which saw steers top at £2520 and heifers £2600.
Only a handful of in calf cows and heifers forward in the breeding section which saw a Friesian in calf heifer to £1680.
25 Feeding Bulls
A mixed selection of bulls forward, however, an exceptional 19 month old Blue from Carrie Sharpley of Macclesfield reached £2420. Other much younger sorts reached £1540 for a 13 month old Blue.

A small entry of weanlings with 5 month old bulls topping at £855 twice for some B Blues and a B Blue heifer at 660 from J Elkin.

Nearly 300 ewes and rams and bidders for everything all breeds and styles.
Top price £225 for Texels from Neville Palfreyman & Family at Flagg with other strong Texels £217, £246 and £203 from the Hadfields and Jeffereys.
Only a few strong Suffolks forward today with the top 8 pens averaging a strong £205.88.
Medium Mules good to sell to over £150 but no really heavy Mules forward.
The better end Gritstones over £120 and looked well sold on the day.
Fewer leaner ewes forward this week but plenty of buyers to mop them up.
In the rams a good sample to a top of £206 for Margaret Heath and Family for a Texel with others at £199.
