Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 12th January

Full steam ahead with stock numbers looking good for the second market of the New Year.  685 cattle and 1,164 sheep sold on a solid trade throughout with OTM cattle prices well up and the demand for the store cattle at record levels.

There were 314 store & breeding cattle on offer selling to a full line up of buyers at prices that seem to have taken yet another lift.

Steers sold to £2,520 and averaged an astonishing £1,784.  Heifers hit £2,600 to average a remarkable £1,578 and the 25 feeding bulls reached £2,420 to average £1,080.

So, if you have store cattle to sell, don’t hesitate, give Alastair Sneddon a call on 07973 982441 and we will ensure your stock receives maximum publicity.

There was an excellent turnout of 168 finished cattle with a good solid demand.

Top figures 468p/kg and £3,882 per head.

The average for the 78 heifers looked good at 386.9p and £2,374 per head.

It is not surprising that OTM cattle numbers are up with concerns about the milk price and fodder stocks, but what is a surprise is that the trade is so good.

Top figures for the 147 animals on sale were 388p/kg and £3,220 per head.

The average was a healthy 253.9 pence and a level £1,700 per head.

Calves were a little more plentiful with 56 forward.  Trade was good with bulls to £855 and heifers £660.

Over in the sheep section there was a total of 1,164 head on offer.

The 886 hoggs looked well sold on the day with lighter weights attracting the most interest.  Top figures 362p/kg and £183.78.

The SQQ average emerged at 336.9 pence making a typical lamb in the 39-45 kg bracket worth £145.03.

In the cull sheep department, the entry of 278 sold well with ewes to £225 to average £140.53 for a sample that included a number of hill breeds.
