Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

The first and most important sale of the year to date is the January edition of the HPLS Suckled Calf Sale.  A bigger entry of 617 cattle were entered with every consignment being forward on the day.  The larger entry attracted a large ring of buyers from up and down the country who were present at advertised start time and the sale kicked off promptly at 10.30am.

The general standard of cattle continues to improve year on year with the High Peak farmers keeping better cows and using better bred bulls to produce the stock that we have sold today.  The vast majority of the calves were Spring 2025 born and therefore 6-10 months old with just a handful of older sorts about.

As stated, the sale started promptly at 10.30 with the bulls and continued as usual with the steers and heifers.  They were generally sold in good sized even bunches with the buyers certainly pushing the boat out to secure the cattle on offer.  The sale was completed at 1.30pm, a true measure of how fast the trade was and all cattle had left Bakewell by 4pm and on their way to their new homes.

Bagshaws would like to thank, once again everyone who made the sale such a success today.  The hauliers for delivering and collecting the cattle, the market staff for their professionalism in handling the stock whilst in the market and the buyers for coming and purchasing the quality cattle that the HPLS sales are renowned for.

The next sale will be held on Friday 13^th March2026 for which entries are now being taken.
