Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 19th January

Almost a full house with a total of 795 cattle and 1,773 sheep from 270 individual vendors.

The section with the greatest increase being the OTM department with no less than 228 head on offer.  This number included 62 from a single vendor, but even without those cattle 166 was a respectable entry.

Thankfully demand outstripped supply and trade was solid throughout.

Top figures for OTM cattle were 337p and £3,267 per head.

The averages looked very creditable at 249.2p/kg and £1,623 per head.

No one is surprised that in view of the milk price drop farmers are selling OTM cattle, but it is good to see the price holding up despite the greater numbers being sold.

Any queries, speak to Oliver Hiles on 07801 530899.

The start of the 137 finished cattle sale was delayed whilst the extra OTM’s were sold, but everything took its course.

Top figures for finished cattle were 420p/kg and £3,077.

The trade was a shade easier and our regular yardstick being the average for the 62 heifers showed 374.4p/kg and £2,338 per head.

Only 37 calves forward possibly a function of the weather, but the prices looked good with bulls to £1,000 and heifers £570.

A total of 393 store & breeding cattle saw recent levels of trade maintained or exceeded.

Steers reached £2,400 ave £1,618, heifers to £2,400 ave £1,503, feeding bulls sold to £1,840 ave £1,028.

In the breeding cattle section there were 4 stock bulls selling to £3,600 and a cow and calf made £2,340.

A decent number of sheep with a total of 1,773 on offer.

The 1,209 hoggs maintained a solid trade with the lighter weights easier to sell than the heavier ones.

Top figures 370p/kg and £182.40 per head.

The SQQ average was 331p/kg and a typical lamb in the 39-45 range sold at £142.38.

564 cull sheep on offer with ewes to £232 to average £123.39.
