Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 16th March

A quieter day with only 522 cattle and 1,983 sheep on offer, but plenty of excitement when it came to trade.

The store & breeding cattle section had fewer on offer, hardly surprising after last week with a total of 1,004 store cattle sold at Bakewell, and of course those who purchased last Friday at the HPLS sale were unable to show stock today.

There were 272 store & breeding cattle with a great trade for all.

Steers sold to £2560 to average £1647 with heifers to £2300 to average £1485.  Feeding bulls reached £1920 to average £1420.

In the breeding section a Charolais cow with twin calves made £3200 and a 49 mnths pure Charolais stock bull made £2900.

Finished cattle numbers down for the reason already stated, but trade slightly firmer top figures 469p and £3766.  The heifer average was 376.0p and £2380 per head.

Fewer OTM cattle on offer with 91 forward, top figures 352p and £3376 averages 256.7p and £1674 per head.

Calves in short supply with 43 on offer.  Trade very strong indeed with bulls to £700 and heifers £670.

There was a decent turnout of 1565 hoggs with a great trade from start to finish.  Top figures 480p/kg and £217.20/head.  The SQQ looking very good at 410.5p, this made a typical animal in the 39-45kg weight range worth £178.65.

More cull sheep on offer with ewes selling to a remarkable £275 to average £150.22.
