BAKEWELL MARKET REPORT

26th May

 

 

Very small entries for the Tuesday market with 30 degrees forecast and many farmers with plenty to do at home.

So, no great quality of stock on offer, but those that were forward were well sold with sufficient buyers in attendance to guarantee a buoyant trade.

There were 30 store & breeding cattle which attracted considerable interest and brisk bidding for all.

Angus x Steers reached £2,000, Angus x Heifers £1,780, Lim Heifers £2,020 and a purebred Lim x stock bull sold at £3,000.

OTM Cattle

Only a handful of barren cows with top prices 212p and an overall average of 187.9 pence.

19 finished cattle with the best on offer to 400p/kg and £2,589 per head.

Sheep

The trade in the sheep shed was as hot as the ambient temperature.

There were 136 Spring lambs selling to 575p/kg and an astonishing £262/head.

SQQ average 495.6 pence and the overall 505.5 pence.

A typical lamb in the 39-45kg range made £215.60.

149 Hoggs forward with top figures 455p/kg and £222/head.

The SQQ was 402.4 pence making a typical hogg in the 39-45kg bracket worth £173.52.

214 cull sheep on offer with demand strong.

Ewes sold to £200 to average £137.88 for a rather mixed selection.

A reduced entry as expected for a Tuesday market but plenty of trade for all types.

B Blue bulls saw 2 stronger sorts at 2 months old both making £1000 and some stronger Herefords of the same age at £690.  Younger types saw bulls at £590 for B Blues and £140 for B/W’s.

A Bank Holiday entry of 499 sheep sold on a brisk trade throughout.  The 136 new season lambs saw best butchers lambs very well sold to a top of 575p for heavy weights with handy weights to 568p/kg, top gross of £262.37/head.

Overall average 505.58p/kg.
