Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Pleasing entries of stock in all departments today with trade up in most sections.

Finished cattle numbers very similar to last week totalling 123 with Oliver reporting a respectable trade for all with tops of 440p/kg and £2,819 for heifers whilst bulls saw tops of 433p/kg and £3,467 in the lump.

OTM numbers back on last weeks bumper entry at 86 and trade again very much in line to 339p/kg and £2,596.

An increased entry of store cattle on the week with 258 forward and trade reported as dearer on the week with steers to £2,460 and heifers to £2,280.

Breeding cattle also attracted substantial interest with a Limousin stock bull at £4,100 and cow & calf outfits to £4,050.

Calves looking as dear as ever for the 43 forward with bulls to £810 and heifers to £675.

A quieter day in the sheep shed for a total entry of 1,180, but both finished lambs and ewes dearer with lambs to average 369.62p/kg and a top of £228 per head.

Please note we have updated our policies regarding the unloading and loading livestock:

• Vendors/Hauliers are responsible for livestock until safely loaded onto the docks. It is the Vendor/Hauliers responsibility to chain and secure gates.

• Once unloaded, all livestock movements are under the direction and control of the Market Drovers.

• Vendors may assist with livestock movement at the discretion of the Drovers.

• Any assistance is voluntary, undertaken at the vendors own risk and must be in accordance with Drover instruction.

• We advise that Purchasers/Hauliers seek Drover assistance prior to loading cattle/sheep.

• If Purchasers/Hauliers choose to load livestock without Drover assistance, they do so voluntarily and at their own risk.

• It is the Purchasers/Hauliers responsibility to chain and secure gates.

• Please ensure that pass-out documentation matches animal identification prior to loading.

Certainly more bite to the trade with all of the regulars coming to ringside with renewed orders that led to improved prices across the board.  9 best over £3 and many more made 280-300p.  Top call of 339p for one of a lovely run of fed cows from Messrs Wilton, Taddington.  Feeding cows continue to sell at high levels with an army of potential purchasers looking to feed cows.

We are starting to see the ARLA cows coming back to the market and why wouldn’t they with this trade.

Similar numbers and takes little nudge forward again with the overall average 4 pence more on the week.

A few more on offer and with 2 new orders at ringside, we could have sold a lot more.  Two stunners from Josh Hall topped the day at 433p (£2953) and 430p (£2872) with a couple more over £4 and big lads to £3467 for David Goddard.

Just a little better with more appetite for the product and buyers bidding a little faster for the quality on offer.  Keith Harrop picked some plumbs today and soared to 418p (£2083)

And a trio from Frank Kunica all at 410p for quality suckler bred Limmys.  10 natives saw Angus to 362p and 5 B/W all looked better sold on the day.

The barometer of trade, the heifer average shows at 15 pence lift on the week and that was well justified as cattle looked better sold.  Rob Nicholls had the pick today with his fancy Limmy at 440p with 15 of the better bred types north of £4/kilo.

A better entry of 258 head met a very swift trade with all qualities keenly sought after.

A smaller entry of breeding cattle but a lovely run from the Limer family of Taddington topped the day at £4050, with other outfits from the same home to £4000 and £3800.

A serious jump in the overall average not least reflecting the quality forward but also the lift in trade overall.  Topping the day was an exceptional Limousin bullock from the Bannister family of Rugeley at £2460 with numerous in that £2300-£2400 bracket.

The heifer average also up on the week topping at £2280 for a Charolais heifer from the Woodward family of Coxbench.

A very good entry of calves today with a modest entry of smaller end calves and a ringside of potential purchasers.

Bulls up to £810 x4 for British Blues from G Matkin & G & M Limer.

Heifers to top at £675 for a British Blue from TN Palfreyman & Son closely followed by a British Blue from G Matkin.

Only 2 B/w’s in today to a top of £215.

An entry of 3 British Blue reared steer calves at 4 months old to top at £1120 and a British Blue reared heifer calf at 5 mnths at £1040.

A reduced entry on last week with trade up a gear and the average up 11p/kg.

All weights and types keenly bid for with top prices of 420p/kg and £228 per head.

A good number forward but plenty more needed to fulfil demand.

The best strong continentals very good to sell and 4 purchasers bidding strongly for these types to a top of £260 for Texels from the Broughs at Monyash, 6 vendors with ewes to £230 and above and the top 8 pens averaging just short of £241/head.

The best strong Mules saw spirited bidding with several consignments £180 to just over £200.

Generally, a few more grazing ewes forward with some vendors looking burnt off on the banks in North Derbyshire and North Staffs.

Plenty of customers for grazers dependant on the style, breed and condition with these types topping at £118-£120.

The rams all a strong trade with the best all over £230 and a top of £265 for Maurice Gregory & Jo.

In the fairness the market average represents a large proportion of grazing types but trade has been good from start to finish and is well up on the week.
