Bakewell Market Report Monday 3rd August
Another hot one with the temperature up to 26 degrees.
Reports of rain dances being performed in the Peak District, but no evidence of success.
Worrying news about Bluetongue in the South West, Winter fodder being fed on some farms, but no sign of stock being sold because of lack of keep.
Market entries only 512 cattle and 1,081 sheep.
Store & Breeding cattle in short supply with demand very strong and a tremendous trade for all of the 213 on offer.

The store trade was outstanding with steers to £2,400 ave £1,690 and heifers to £2,320 ave £1,677.
Don’t forget that these averages include all the young and small cattle from the early part of the sale.
Feeding bulls reached £1,800 and cows & calves from a moorland farm to £2,080.
A decent show of 124 finished cattle sold on a stronger trade with prices well up to the mark, top figures 448p/kg and £3,196 with the average for the 63 heifers at a healthy 368.4p and £2,156 per head.
OTM cattle hard to find with just 88 on offer.
Top figures 338p/kg and £3,698 per head.
The overall average a solid 250.1 pence per head.
A bumper crop of calves with 87 on offer. Prices still hard to believe with bulls to £920 and heifers £830.
Over in the sheep department there were 817 lambs with prices easier as is usual at this time of year.
Top figures 368p/kg and £186 per head.
The SQQ average was 319.3p and the overall average to include the heavier lambs was 322.5p.
This makes a typical lamb on the 39-45 bracket worth £136.60.
247 cull ewes on offer with the best to £259 to average a hefty £173.43.

- We advise that Purchasers/Hauliers seek Drover assistance prior to loading cattle/sheep.
