Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

With the countryside having gone brown to green in the space of a few days entries were distinctly modest for the post Bank Holiday Tuesday market with some 69 cattle and 576 sheep on offer.

Those vendors who did consign stock were well rewarded with decent prices.

There were only 23 store & breeding cattle forward, but fierce bidding ensured very satisfactory results.

Notable prices included:

There were 29 Finished Cattle on offer with top figures 390p/kg and £2,878 per head.

The average for the 11 heifers was 354.7p and £2,107 per head.

OTM cattle very thin on the ground with examples to 245p/kg and £2,006 per head.

Plenty of trade for the 11 calves with bulls to £575 and heifers also at £575.

A reasonable turnout of sheep with 463 lambs on offer.  These looked well sold with top figures 360p/kg and £169.95 per head.

The SQQ average was 323.4 pence with the overall which includes heavier lambs at 325.8p.

There were 112 cull sheep forward with ewes to £200 to average £118.866 for a very mixed sample

• Vendors/Hauliers are responsible for livestock until safely loaded onto the docks. It is the Vendor/Hauliers responsibility to chain and secure gates.

• Once unloaded, all livestock movements are under the direction and control of the Market Drovers.

• Vendors may assist with livestock movement at the discretion of the Drovers.

• Any assistance is voluntary, undertaken at the vendors own risk and must be in accordance with Drover instruction.

• We advise that Purchasers/Hauliers seek Drover assistance prior to loading cattle/sheep.

• If Purchasers/Hauliers choose to load livestock without Drover assistance, they do so voluntarily and at their own risk.

• It is the Purchasers/Hauliers responsibility to chain and secure gates.

• Please ensure that pass-out documentation matches animal identification prior to loading.

A Bank Holiday entry of 576 sheep included 464 lambs.  Better well fed sorts keenly bid for with a top of 360p/kg (twice) with heavy weight butchers lambs to 355p/kg.  Overall average 325.9p/kg.

Just 112 cull ewes and rams still in demand to a top of £200 for ewes and £220 for rams.  A number of plain Swales within the entry brought the overall average back.
