Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Decent entries in all departments with 665 cattle and 1,588 sheep on offer.

Trade good throughout with finished cattle up, OTM much dearer and store cattle at tremendous prices.

In the sheep section lambs were up by a substantial margin.

The were 398 store & breeding cattle forward with a full line up of buyers from far and near.

Steers topped at a healthy £2,380 to average £1,716 with heifers to £2,320 ave £1,633 and feeding bulls to £2,220.

In the finished cattle section, there were 126 head on offer.

Top figures 442p/kg and £3,301 per head.

The average for the 40 heifers was a remarkable 380.9 pence and £2,359 per head, 22 pence rise on the week.

OTM cattle were also better sold with the average up 23p on the week at 234.4 pence.  There were 70 on offer with top figures 332p/kg and £2,705 per head.

The average per head price was a useful £1,617 up nearly £150 on the week.

A good turnout of calves with 71 on offer, prices remain very strong with bulls to £820 and heifers £650.

Sheep Section

The were 1,240 lambs this week with demand stronger and the SQQ average up at 337.4p.  The overall average which includes the heavier lambs were even better at 342.9 pence.

Top prices for lambs were 399p/kg and a stunning £259.63 per head.

Based on the above averages a typical lamb in the 39-45kg bracket was worth £143.94.

There were 338 cull sheep on offer with the best ewes to £250 to average £138.01 for a sample which included a good many plain sorts.

• Vendors/Hauliers are responsible for livestock until safely loaded onto the docks. It is the Vendor/Hauliers responsibility to chain and secure gates.

• Once unloaded, all livestock movements are under the direction and control of the Market Drovers.

• Vendors may assist with livestock movement at the discretion of the Drovers.

• Any assistance is voluntary, undertaken at the vendors own risk and must be in accordance with Drover instruction.

• We advise that Purchasers/Hauliers seek Drover assistance prior to loading cattle/sheep.

• If Purchasers/Hauliers choose to load livestock without Drover assistance, they do so voluntarily and at their own risk.

• It is the Purchasers/Hauliers responsibility to chain and secure gates.

• Please ensure that pass-out documentation matches animal identification prior to loading.

A big jump in trade with numbers limited nationally and cows urgently wanted.  A full line up of buyers with the meat in particular looking well sold.  Better end generally 260p plus including 8 over 300p.  Chris Hall had a couple of Limousin heifers at 332p and 331p with the best cow at 328p (£2624) for a quality Limousin from Ian Meller, Kniveton.

Like the cows, better sold with the Livestock market driving the price in a forward direction.

49 Bulls Ave 341p

Good numbers again and trade very good with the larger number of buyers all competing well for the bulls.  6 best end over 400p and another 5 in the 390’s.  Josh Hall kept his place at the top with a Blue x bull at 429p.

10 B/W’s today with the best heavy Friesians to 308p.

Like all the finished today a stronger price with the top 4 over £4 and up to 419, 406 and 400p for the Edge Family, Minninglow.  10 natives to 360p for an Angus and 5 B/W’s to 340p.

The true barometer of trade sees a 20 pence lift on the week and they felt good to sell.  The Binns Family had 3 stunning Limmys at 442p at 428p (twice) with a run from Peter Gaunt at 424, 421 and 420p etc and Clive Bacons best to 421p or £3031.  8 Natives to 384p for a Hereford at 374p for an Angus.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneers Alastair Sneddon & Meg Elliott)

Another good show of 398 store & breeding cattle sold on an even better trade than last week perhaps fuelled by increases in the finished cattle sector.

All classes of cattle were in great demand with plenty of highlights throughout the sale which included some superb runs of cattle.

Breeding cattle remain very scarce and if you have some to sell demand is definitely there.

A Simmental stock bull made £2,250.

Plenty of demand for all types.  Several runs of 10 to 20 from on farm allowing sale in level bunches which kept up momentum and attracted a premium.

A good entry of calves today with a ringside full of potential buyers and vendors.  The smaller end of calves have been very well bid for and sold with best calves harder to sell.

With saying that, the best bull topped at £770 for a Limousin from RS Hall and heifers topped at £650 for a British Blue from GW & WL Neville.

Only one reared calf in at 5 mnths topped at £820 for a Limousin Bull.

A total entry of 1588 Sheep included 1,240 new season lambs.  Demand very brisk throughout with best up to 399p/kg for heavier sorts with butchers lambs to 396p/kg and lightweights to 398p/kg.  The best 10 pens averaged 389p/kg.  The overall average 342.95p/kg up over 12/kg on the week.  The best big lambs grossed £260/head.

Just 2 old season lambs attracted very brisk bidding to 290p/kg and £200/head.

338 Ewes & Rams

A very mixed entry with a larger proportion of grazing types penned today.  Trade good with all the best meat very well bid for but saw vendors very well rewarded.

Best fleshed continental ewes regularly £220 and above with Bernard Archer topping at £250 and Richard Hooley at £240.

Better end Mules towards £160 but in fairness no absolute plums in the entry.

Meated horned ewes regularly £110 to £124.  Better Suffolks but not pure to nicely over £210/head.

Several vendors with grazers leaving extremely happy with small framed Mules over £100 and half bred Texels over £120.

Only 3 rams forward to a top of £240 for Keith Swift.
