Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Another gathering of stock in all departments with 754 cattle on offer together with 1,403 sheep and trade again reported as strong in all areas.

An increased entry of barren cows with a total of 121 on offer with Oliver reporting trade up again this week as was the case last week with tops of 354p/kg and £2,765 per head.

Finished cattle numbers remain tight with 53 clean and 34 bulls, but again plenty of demand with the best over 400p/kg to tops of 438p/kg and £3,034 per head.

An excellent entry of store cattle totalling 501 with those forward rewarded with an excellent trade for all types with steers averaging £1,736 to a top of £2,460 and heifers at £1,564 to a top of £2,160.

A few less lambs today at 951 and trade a little easier than last week to average 331.18p/kg and indeed very similar to 2 weeks ago peaking at 375p/kg and £187 per head whilst the 452 cull ewes look well sold to a top of £276.

45 calves on an excellent trade for all with bulls to £795 and heifers £655.

• Vendors/Hauliers are responsible for livestock until safely loaded onto the docks. It is the Vendor/Hauliers responsibility to chain and secure gates.

• Once unloaded, all livestock movements are under the direction and control of the Market Drovers.

• Vendors may assist with livestock movement at the discretion of the Drovers.

• Any assistance is voluntary, undertaken at the vendors own risk and must be in accordance with Drover instruction.

• We advise that Purchasers/Hauliers seek Drover assistance prior to loading cattle/sheep.

• If Purchasers/Hauliers choose to load livestock without Drover assistance, they do so voluntarily and at their own risk.

• It is the Purchasers/Hauliers responsibility to chain and secure gates.

• Please ensure that pass-out documentation matches animal identification prior to loading.

Way up last week and better again today for a lot bigger show of cows. The buyers are certainly having to up their game, week on week and that is being reflected in better returns for you the farmer.  12 best over 300p with a 1 calf 22 month old Lim x cow at 354 pence (£2223) from Jeremy Gratton with the best of the older cows at 324p (£2624) for a Limousin from Micheal Critchlow.  Plenty of feeding men about again with the younger types suitable for feeding looking very well sold once again.

Low, low numbers but potentially a lot of producers tied up with the 6 day rule.  Trade on fire from start to finish.

34 Bulls Ave 339.3p

Good to sell with all accounts operating and needing cattle.  5 best sucklers over 417p and up to 430p for a lovely shapey and handy weight Limousin from Mark Sweetmore.   7 Natives to 340p and 12 B/W’s to 316p for a Friesian and £2610 for a big Holstein.

A solid price for each and every one with many more capable of being sold. Micheal Critchlow had the pick at 420p (£2671) with Alex Birch t/a Thorp Farms, Baslow close behind at 412p.  8 Angus to 394p.

A stronger trade again with the top 15 over £4/kilo.  Josh Hall had the pick today with his best at 438p for a very shapey handy weight B Blue.  A big tank of a heifer from Messrs Wardman came to £3920 (416p).  9 Natives to 400p for Angus and 372p for Herefords.

A fantastic show of 501 cattle sold on what was probably an even better trade with all classes keenly sought after.

20 Breeding Cattle

A handful of cows and calves met spirited bidding with a Galloway outfit reaching £2320 and a 10 year old Charolais Stock Bull to £2580.

A small entry of feeding bulls that were nearly all much younger in age.

A decent entry of calves with similar comments as to last week with the smaller end of calves being very well bid for.  Bulls topped at £795 for BD Hudson with a British Blue.  Heifers to a top of £655 for a British Blue from D Fotherby & Sons.

A total entry of 1403 sheep included 951 lambs.  Demand for meated fed lambs still very brisk with best butchers lambs to 369p/kg and heavy butchers lambs to 375p/kg with a top gross of £187.73/head.  A percentage of grass fed lighter weight sorts sold in the 340-345p/kg bracket.  Overall average 331.18p/kg.

A very good entry for the time of year as unfortunately some vendors trapped with the 6 day rule.  Yet again, grazers a strong feature of the sale and trade strong.

Plenty of strong continentals £215 and above with Andrew & Jill Gagie at £235.

Heavy ewes topped at £276 with 12 lots over £200.

Better strong Mules good to sell but good flesh is needed and the better end (big weights) £180 plus.

An excellent run of strong meated Swales from a Sheffield vendor topped at £148/head.  Grazing buyers for all types whether they be small, lean and horned or framed crossbreds lacking flesh.

In the rams the better fleshed Texels over £170 with the best at £208 from the Hawksworths at Shardlow
