Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market & Christmas Primestock Show & Sale Report 2024-12-02

A wonderful celebration of livestock at Christmas with the traditional carol service and Primestock show taking place on Sunday afternoon and the sale of the show stock integrated with the regular Monday market day.

The Sunday event was a great success with many hundreds of farmers and their families enjoying both service and show, followed by seasonal refreshments.

The Monday entries matched a regular week with 689 cattle and 1,309 sheep on offer.

Judging of the show stock was kindly undertaken by Laurie & Trevor Ibbottson for the cattle & Matthew Prince for the sheep.

Full details of the show can be found later in this report.

The store & breeding cattle department was very well supported and often has a smaller entry on show day, but not this year with 343 head forward.

There was a good selection on offer and trade was excellent with serious highlights for the best young suckler bred cattle.  Steers hit £1,900, heifers £1,480 and feeding bulls £1,890.

Always difficult to give details of overall results for finished cattle on show day.  Suffice it to say that both show and commercial cattle sold exceptionally well with a top figure of 900p/kg and £5,814 per head.

Overall figures are more representative, but still remarkable with 44 steers averaging 333.6p/kg and 65 heifers averaging 366.2p, even the bulls broke the sound barrier with 239 averaging 302.3 pence.

All in all, a great sale

OTM cattle were out in force with 133 on offer.  Trade was well up to snuff with top figures 278p/kg and £2,702 per head.

The average looked healthy too at 187.4 pence.

A better selection of calves with 74 forward, bulls sold to £375 and heifers £320.

In the sheep section there were 1,044 lambs on offer with the champion pen making 540p/kg and a top gross price of £248.40 per head.

In overall terms the SQQ average was a decent 313.4 pence and the per head average for the 485 lambs in the 39.1 – 45.5kg range was £134 per head.

Strong trade too in the cull sheep section with 236 ewes selling to £224/head to average £126.75

133 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS overall ave 187.4p/kg or £1257

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

A big turnout of cows for Christmas week and certainly dearer on the week with the average reporting the cow 11 pence more money on the week, but there were a few special cows about for show week.  Best young cows (1 calf) from Mosley & Co, Chelmorten rose to a superb 278 pence with the best end of the cows 240p plus.  Cows look like they are on the move again and they look to stay good through the Christmas period.

If you have any cows to sell or want any advice, give me a call on 07801 530899.

2 unbelievable days for the Christmas Show & Sale

Champion Makes £9.00 or £5,814

Reserve Makes £5.00 or £3,470

42 Haltered & Unhaltered Show Cattle averaged 412p

The Champion Presentation with Oliver Hiles (Auctioneer), Trevor Ibbottson (Judge), Jack Gratton, The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire (presenting the trophy) and Laurie Ibbottson (judge)

Bakewell Primestock Show and sale is fully established as one of the premier two-day primestock events in the country. The market has built its reputation for selling over 120 finished cattle each week to a wide selection of butchers and wholesalers who support the market throughout the year.

The annual Prime Stock show ran its regular format with the show of the stock being held on the Sunday afternoon with a massive crowd of spectators enjoying the festivities and Carol service. The stock is then held overnight and sold in the relevant sections on the Monday to a large band of buyers who descended from all corners to buy the show stock.

Highlight of the day is unquestionably the sale of the cattle champions with the Champion Beast selling for the top price of the year of 900p/kilo (£5814) and the reserve champion making £5 (£3470) with 2 other superb heifers over £5/kilo.

A massive crowd was present on Sunday 1st December for the Annual Carol Service, the Cattle & Sheep Show as well as a superb Hog Roast in the market concourse.

The Judging for the cattle this year was carried out by the father and daughter partnership of Mr Trevor and Miss Laurie Ibbottson. Trevor has been a regular buyer of some of the best and highest priced cattle in the prime ring for the past 3½ years whilst his daughter Laurie is the Assistant Managing Director at Dovecote Park, one of the country’s leading meat processing plants. The pair work well together, knowing what they want to see in the cattle and inspected every animal closely until they were satisfied with their placings and few could argue that he picked out some fabulous cattle at the top of the lines.

The judges selected the finest heifer in the show, a heifer that would be fit to grace any national primestock event anywhere. This brilliant, homebred, black Limousin won the senior heifer class, also the Robert Walker Trophy Class and then, in a glittering climax was tapped out as champion of the show. The heifer weighed in at 646kg and was consigned by Tom & Jack Gratton from Riber, Matlock. Both the Duke & Duchess of Devonshire were at ringside and enjoyed watching the judging and engaging with the farmers. They were keen to learn that the final 5 cattle in the championship lineup were from 5 different regular exhibitors and all from within 15miles of the market. They presented their family’s Devonshire Cup at the culmination of proceedings. The Champion sold on Monday to Ben Savage for his butchers shop on Eccleshall Road, Sheffield for 900p/kg to gross £5814

Reserve Champion was another heifer shown by the Dickinson & Powdrill show team. This black, British blue won the intermediate heifers and weighed in at 694kg and sold for £5/kilo with the winning bid coming from Laurie Ibbottson, Dovecote Park

Best opposite sex to the champion this year and winner of the Bakewell Show Trophy was a Blue sired bullock from Michael Wynne. He won the 1st class of the day and weighed 628kg and sold for 430p (£2700) to Woolley Bros, Sheffield.

The High Peak Livestock Society Cup this year was won by local store cattle exhibitor Jonathon Hall of Longnor. This lovely red Limousin heifer was the one he chose to finish for the Christmas show and was well rewarded by winning it’s heifer class as well as the HPLS cup class. It weighed 534kg and sold for the days second top price of 550p (£2937) to Ian Meakin, High Street butchers in Leek.

A Young Handler class, first introduced in 2015 to recognise the amount of young talent that show cattle at Bakewell. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to get cattle trained for showing and if it wasn’t for the interest shown by these young people on their family’s farms, then some of the cattle would not be brought forward for showing. This year there were 4 youngsters, aged between 12 and 17 years, competing for the trophy. This year the winner was 17-year-old Ruby Astley.

SHEEP – Show Results

Champion pen Jane Bonsall with her medium weights

A total of 250 lambs forward for the Annual Primestock Show & Sale.  An excellent show from local farmers produced a tremendous line up of lambs in 3 continental classes and 3 further native bred classes.  In the continental classes up to 19 different pens were presented in front of the judge, Matthew Prince of Stonedge Farm Shop, giving him a difficult task selecting his prizewinning line up.
