Monday 25^th October

Another strong entry with a total of 647 Cattle and 2031 Sheep forward with a pleasing trade in all sections.

A total of 392 Store and Breeding Cattle on offer attracted keen interest with both stronger and long term sorts in keen demand, Steers to £1535 and heifers to £1380 both from IC Ford, Lyme Handley.

OTM cattle possibly a little easier than of late with reports of processing problems at abattoirs a significant factor but still a respectable trade to a top of £1828 for a 5 year old Limousin Cow.

More finished cattle forward with the best cattle an excellent trade with best heifers to 314p/kg but trade for the lesser sorts perhaps a little more selective but still strong with the steers averaging 208.8p/kg and heifers 220.1p/kg.

A few less calves but trade remains firm with Bulls to £305.

Another busy morning in the Sheep Shed with a trade of 1544 Lambs on offer and trade remaining strong to return an average of 237.31p/kg.  Cull Ewes Best continentals to £165 Per head.

A few less on offer and a less trade throughout with processing problems at Abattoirs being the biggest concern and indeed one buyer absent today.  Best today was one of the last onto the ring being a pure Limousin Cow, 5 yrs, at 180p to gross a superb £1828.  Better cows still over 150p. Plenty of feeding cows and customers today and many of these look best sold on the day.

A Greater percentage of Black 7 Whites today with the average back about 4p on the week.

Nearly double the entry as expected after the suckler sale a week on Friday.  At the top end trade is outstanding with 4 heifers today over £3/kilo.

14 Finished Bulls ave 219.4p/kg

A fantastic trade throughout with a super top call of 274p or £1830 for a John Ottewell special Lim. A big Charolais topped out at £1907 for J Collier, Burton on Trent, Friesians sold to 200p for Chris Beever.

42 Steers – overall average 208.8p

Yes the average is less but the better cattle certainly are not. Best B Blue x steers today sold to 282p for Steven, Stef and Owen Wells, Monyash, Michael Wynne had 268p and Stan Evans 264p and 260p, 19 natives today (nearly ½ the entry) sold to 246p for Herefords and 248p for Beef Shorthorns.

66 Finished Heifers – overall average 220.1p/kg

Three times as many as last week and the best absolutely remarkable Michael Wynne scaled new heights for Bakewell Mondays selling his 2 best heifers at 314p and 312p to butchers in Stoke on Trent and Hayfield. Adam Neachell had his 2 best at 302p and 301p, The Wells family at 295p. 23 natives today had Herefords up 234p

Trade remains really good particularly for the best beef bred over 22 months of age with buyers out for all categories and seasonal purchasers looking for younger cattle to yard up this winter and run out for next season.

Trade still very strong with plenty of bidders for smaller sorts and potential purchasers looking towards next year.

A smaller entry of calves but trade again strong with bulls to £348 and heifers to £280.

All types in keen demand with the better Black and Whites up on last weeks trade.

1547 Lambs & 484 Ewes & Rams (Auctioneer Peter Oven)

A very good entry of 2,031 sheep included 1,547 lambs. Demand still very good throughout with buyers for all types. Best light weight lambs to 288p/kg with butcher’s lambs to 279p/kg and overweight lambs to 257p/kg. Top gross price of £131.66.

The overall average 237.31p/kg.

484 Cull Sheep

A good show of 484 cull ewes and rams attracted very brisk bidding with 5 grazing buyers bidding alongside the regular men. Best Texel ewes peaked at £165 with 9 lots over £140/head. Best Suffolks in the £120-£130, Mules in the £90-£110 bracket.
