Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Repor 18-01-2021

Solid entries of 523 cattle and 1,714 sheep with cattle dearer than ever and sheep a shade less after the recent very steep rise in prices.

Sufficient buying power either present or represented and full compliance with the new tougher COVID rules at Bakewell.

A slightly increased entry of 292 Store & Breeding Cattle with prices up yet again.  The stronger cattle were particularly dear with heifers and steers both topping at £1,320 and feeding bulls £820, in-calf heifers reached £1,040.

We could certainly have sold more store cattle had they been available.  If you have cattle in test and are minded to sell, do not hesitate to speak to Alastair Sneddon 07973982441.

It is the High Peak Livestock Society sale of Suckled Calves on Friday with an outstanding entry of almost 800 top quality cattle.

Another decent entry of 112 finished cattle with trade very strong indeed.  Top prices 255p and £1,742.

The overall average for the 48 heifers looked good at 208.7p.

OTM and Feeding Cows in short supply with only 80 forward and trade very brisk.  Top prices 189p and £1,802, the overall average similar to last week at 129.6p.

Only 40 Calves on offer with bulls to £395 and heifers £178.

In the sheep section trade for the 1,286 old season lambs was a shade easier.  The best on offer sold to 285p and £137.1p.

The SQQ average was down at 242p, failing to keep pace with last weeks exceptional figure, but a significant improvement on last year’s 210p.

A good sample of 403 Cull Sheep with ewes to £178 and the average £97.97.
