Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2022-10-17

MONDAY 17th OCTOBER 2022

A few less stock than last week with 847 cattle and 1985 sheep on offer.

The Store & Breeding section still well supported with 479 head after several weeks of full capacity.

Trade, however, was well up to snuff with plenty of highlights and steers to £1,590, heifers to £1,460 and feeding bulls to £1,240.

In the breeding section cows and calves topped at £1940 with in calvers to £1,040 and stock bulls to £1,950.

Finished cattle numbers are holding up well with 130 this week.  Top figures 306p/kg and £2,034 per head.

Our usual barometer of trade the average for the 36 heifers looked very fair at 245.8p.

OTM & feeding cows were out in force with 137 on offer.  Top figures 228p/kg and £1,944 per head.

The average was up a shade this week at a healthy looking 166.6p.

A bumper crop of calves forward with 101 in total.  Bulls sold to £292 and heifers £235.

In the sheep section the 1,387 lambs maintained recent trends with well meated lambs making their money and the plainer sorts selling at substantially less.

The market average of course depends on the relative number of meated lambs to plain lambs.

Top prices today were 256p/kg and £149.80 per head.

The SQQ was back abit at 225p, but time will tell whether this is a good price on the week.

558 cull sheep with ewes to £155 to average £74.61
