Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 24-10-2022

Monday 24th October

Bakewell Market Report

Numbers just starting to ease after a very busy spell with 721 cattle and 1754 sheep on offer.

A total of 391 store and breeding cattle forward with trade remaining good, but concerns about feed prices clearly starting to concentrate minds.

Steers topped at £1,560 and heifers at £1,590.

A decent show of 133 finished cattle with strong demand and top figures at 300 pence and £2,092 per head.

The average for the 53 heifers looked very good at 246.9 pence.

OTM & feeding cows still coming forward in large numbers with 158 this week.

Top figures 212 pence p/kg and £2,012 and the average very similar to last week at 164.2 pence.

Only 39 Calves on after with bulls to £360 and heifers £205.

In the sheep section, there were 1198 lambs forward and the usual story.

Outstanding prices for the top quality well meated lambs and much lesser prices for plainer sorts.

Top figures 280p /kg and £143.73 per head.

It is interesting to note that the SQQ average was 231.7 pence, but the overall average which includes the heavy lambs in the total was 234.4 pence.

Indicating the demand for the bigger weight, better finished lambs.

551 cull sheep on sale with ewes to £160 to average £84.29.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneer Alastair Sneddon)

Numbers starting to dwindle with only 391 cattle on offer.

Trade remains solid with top quality cattle looks very well sold, but are one or two buyers are clearly nearing the exit of their autumn purchases and there are concerns being voiced about the cost of feed and bedding for the upcoming months.

The Sale commenced with a handful of breeding stock followed by a small selection of feeding bulls which included: –

30 Feeding Bulls

There were 30 feeding bulls which included:

£640 AA X 7-9 mnths V F Gibson, Thorpe
£680 Br Blue X 9 mnths V F Gibson, Thorpe
£585 Lim 6 mnths Miss N Wood,  Lathkill
£540 Lim 7 mnths M Dunnington, Wrangler

214 Steers ave £877

More young cattle forward including several runs of quality suckled calves which sold very well indeed.

Angus and Hereford came in good demand, regardless of age.

Significant numbers of older cattle that have clearly suffered during the dry summer, are all finding a buyer but at a price rather lower than the best.

Black and Whites attracting keen competition.

Plenty of demand and some excellent prices achieved for the better-quality sorts. Also ran stock finding a ready market, but at appropriate prices. Some cattle starting to show signs of weather. If you are planning to sell stores, do not delay whilst the stock “goes backwards” and takes more expensive feed to “warm it up again”.
