Bakewell Market Report 31-10-2022
MONDAY 31st OCTOBER 2022
Numbers not greatly different from last week with 737 cattle and 2,125 sheep on offer.
A strong trade reported in all sections with plenty of highlights for the best quality stock.
Store & Breeding cattle numbers were much as last week with 405 in total.
Steers reached £1,580, heifers £1,420 and feeding bulls £1,050. In the breeding section cows and calves sold to £1,520.
Another good day for the finished cattle section with 139 head on offer. Top figures 308p and £1,976 per head.
The average for the 51 heifers was an excellent 248.4p.
OTM & feeding cows were out in good numbers with a total of 152 on sale. Top figures 230p and £2,004 per head. The average a healthy 163.0p.
42 calves this week with bulls to £335 and heifers £160.
A good show of sheep with the sale commencing with some 1,380 lambs.
Top figures 269p and £145 per head for the best on offer.
Well meated lambs commanded a distinct premium with well fleshed heavy weight lambs looking very well sold.
The SQQ average was 230.1p a statistic very much the same as last week.
A large entry of 744 cull sheep with ewes to £158 to average £87.80.

A very large entry of cows again today with 152 on offer from 66 different farms around the Peak District and further beyond all sending cows to Bakewell to enjoy the trade that is there to take. 4 extra buyers at ringside today who were absent last week and a very similar trade overall with the average just 1 penny different. Best cows today peaked at 230p or £1715 for a 1 calf Blue x from Graham Bright with all of the better cows over 185p.

Good numbers again with 52 vendors of finished cattle today and selling to a packed ring of buyers who created 21 different accounts.
35 Young Bulls ave 219.1p
All shapes and sizes including a 31 mnth old Holstein a very best shaped Limousin with buyers for all. Steven, Steff and Owen Wells had a couple of stunners at 285 and 275p with Arthur Prue at the top of the gross list at £1854. 11 B/W’s today with the majority 200-210p/kg.

Some excellent cattle this week with the buyers in the Christmas spirit with festive buying in full swing. Richard Naylor had 2 smart showy steers at 308p each. Stan Evans had a well built Limmy at 290p with John Grummetts pair at 268p. 14 Natives had Angus at 242p, Longhorn at 256p, Devon at 229p and Hereford at 240p. 3 B/W sold at 211-214p.

A similar entry of 405 cattle sold on a solid trade from start to finish.
It is clear that some purchasers have filled their yards, but there were new faces around the ring and demand remains good.
A massive range of prices for animals answering the same general description. The difference being down to quality and potential.
Some consignments have clearly had a very hard year and are small for their age, but everything found a buyer at an appropriate price.

An outstanding entry of 2120 head of sheep included 1376 lambs. Demand very similar to recent weeks with plenty of demand for meated sorts regardless of weight. Big lambs in general an outstanding trade with the top price for a pen of overweight Texels being 274p/kg with a gross of £145. Heavy weight butchers lambs to 271p/kg. The overall average 231.56p/kg.

Just short of 750 ewes and slaughter rams and the trade bright and sharp from start to finish.
Vendors from afar and the best 20% definitely up on last week.
Top call £158 for very smart Texels from The Salisbury family at Cockey Farm with others at £146 and £143 from the Palfreymans and Hambletons.
Better meated Mules good to sell between £99 and £118 with better end Suffolks and crosses £118-£132.
Still customers for grazing sorts and a good compliment of buyers present.
Best slaughter rams to £156 and £138 for Suffolk and Texel.
