Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2022-11-28

MONDAY 28th NOVEMBER

Twelve months ago, we were visited by a dose of ice and snow.  Not the case this year with mild conditions prevailing over the weekend and stock numbers good for the time of year with 619 cattle and 1,807 sheep.

A strong trade in all departments with increased averages across the board.

A smaller entry of 308 store & breeding cattle sold on a sharper trade with top class animals making some tremendous prices.  Steers hit £1,380, heifers £1,540 and feeding bulls £1,310.

In the breeding section a pure-bred Limousin bull made £2,900.

Another good entry of 138 finished cattle saw prices up a notch with top figures 309p and £2,146.

The average for the 68 heifers was 255.9p indicating the level of demand.

152 OTM cattle were also in great demand with top figures 230p and £1,985 per head.

The overall average an upbeat 164.8p.

Only 21 calves this week with bulls to £280 and heifers £135.

In the sheep section there were 984 lambs with averages about 10p up on the week.

The best lambs made 306p/kg and £166.23 per head with the SQQ average 254.4p and the overall 256.9p.

The average per head for lambs in the 39-45kg bracket was £108.23.

Finally – a bumper crop of 817 cull sheep with ewes to £192 to average £100.01 per head.
