Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2022-12-05

As is now traditional the Bakewell Christmas Primestock Show & Sale is a 2-day affair with the stock judged on

the Sunday alongside the carol service and the show animals held overnight to be sold in the relevant sections

on Monday.

Sunday was a great success with a capacity crowd of farming families present in the market to see the stock judged or attend the carol service or do some of both.

The results of the show and sale of prize stock can be found later in this report.

The regular market tends to be a bit quieter on show day with smaller numbers in some sections.

Only 234 store & breeding cattle this week, but additional buyers operating and a very strong trade from start

to finish.  Steers sold to £1,420, heifers £1,190 and feeding bulls £1,180.

These prices might not look as exciting as some we have achieved in recent weeks, but it is simply that there as

no outstanding big cattle to hit the highlights.  The general trade was excellent.

155 finished cattle with statistics distorted by the show animals.  Needless to say, that everything sold well with the champion at 880p/kg to gross £5,579.  What tells you more about trade and the quality of cattle is the

average for the 71 heifers at 296p.

A few less OTM and feeding cows with trade well up to the level of recent weeks.  Top figures 241p and £2,371.

Overall average up a notch at 171.4p average per head £1,194.

44 Calves, bulls to £270 and heifers £220.

In the sheep sections 1,176 lambs sold on a great trade with the champion at 400p and £190.40.

The SQQ average was 258.7p with the overall even higher at 260.5p.

Cull sheep numbers down a bit, but still a useful entry with ewes to £193 to average £89.62.

 Record Trade at Bakewell

Champion Makes £8.80 or £5,579 Reserve Makes £6.00 or £3,552

“Unbelievable trade, Fantastic Cattle”

The Champion Presentation with the auctioneer, Oliver Hiles, Jack Gratton (holding the Champion) the Duchess of Devonshire presenting the cup and the Judge Joe Kemp with his niece Katie

The Bakewell Primestock Show and Sale is fully established as one of the premier two-day primestock events in the country.  The format works exceptionally well with the show of the stock being held on the Sunday afternoon with a massive crowd of spectators enjoying the festivities and Carol service. The stock is then held overnight and sold in the relevant sections on the Monday to a large band of buyers who descended from all corners to buy the show stock.

Highlight of the day is unquestionably the sale of the cattle champions with the Champion Beast selling for the top price of the year of £8.80 (£5579) and the reserve champion making £6 (£3552) with 4 other superb heifers over £4/kilo.

A massive crowd descended on Bakewell on Sunday 4th December for the Annual Carol Service, the Cattle & Sheep Show as well as a superb Hog Roast in the market concourse.

The Judging for the cattle this year was carried out by Joe Kemp, a wonderful supporter of the market and who has purchased many of the best cattle over the last 12 months for his new and very smart butchers’ shop at Hayfield. He was supported at the ringside by his father Trevor Kemp who kept a keen eye on proceedings and many will know Joe’s sister, Lizzy who is in the market most Mondays with her livestock haulage business. Joe did a wonderful and thorough job of judging and inspected every animal until he was satisfied with his placings and few could argue that he picked out some fabulous cattle at the top of the lines.

Joe selected an outstanding heifer to win the show. Possibly one of the finest heifers to ever be in the market at Bakewell. A superbly fed 634kg Black Limousin x heifer bred in Lincolnshire by the Lyon family, she won the senior heifer class and went on to stand overall Champion from local show boys Tom & Jack Gratton from Riber, nr Matlock. The Duchess of Devonshire was at ringside and enjoyed watching the judging and engaging with the farmers. She presented her families Devonshire Cup at the culmination of proceedings. The Champion sold on Monday with the Joe backing his judgement and the meat will be available in Hayfield over the festive period.

Reserve Champion on the day, was another black Limousin x heifer that had been shown by Michael & Ellie Wynne. She won the junior heifer class weighing in at 592kg and sold for £6/kilo with the winning bid coming from Nick Coates, for his shop at Darley Dale.

Reserve Champion from Ellie Wynne.

Best Opposite sex to the champion and Champion Steer was a wonderful Limousin from regular exhibitors Andrew Dickinson & Lisa Powdrill who sold their steer for 310p (£2095) to Messrs Woolley Bros who were once again fantastic supporters of the sale and ending up with 8 show cattle and well as being contending bidders on the Champion.  The Dickinson & Powdrill show team had a superb day and also won the Robert Walker Trophy, The best homebred beast from the High Peak Livestock Society. He sold for 385p/kg to gross £2063 and was purchased by Richard Taylor on behalf of his families firm Owen Taylor & Sons of Leabrooks who purchased 9 show cattle.

by Tony Kaunhoven, Vicar of Bakewell and President of Bakewell Show

The High Peak Livestock Society Cup this year was won by James Hodgkinson who showed 2 lovely heifers this year with the cup winning heifer being a 608kg heifer that sold for £4.40 to the Judge

HPLS winner James Hodgkinson with the judge presenting the trophy.

A Young Handler class, first introduced in 2015 to recognise the amount of young talent that show cattle at Bakewell. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to get cattle trained for showing and if it wasn’t for the interest shown by these young people on their family’s farms, then some of the cattle would not be brought forward for showing. This year there were 6 youngsters, aged between 10 and 21 years, competing for the trophy and it was the youngest of these, Fred Powdrill-Swinscoe (15 years) from Belper who was triumphant for the second year in succession.
